Newbie in stuff is cheaper up north shocker.

I was in Agnews and Hursts on the Boucher Rd yesterday. Roughly half the cars there were southern registered. Some nice stuff in Hursts from Ferraris to Astons so obviously those with a few euros are spending it wisely.

 

It would only be worth it if you were going up to buy many a euro's worth of goods, although I think that is pretty obvious.

Maybe have someone go up and buy many parts for many people every month or so.

 

you'll find that depending on what you're buying, 100pound spent will be enough to have saved you a bomb.
complete driveshaft for an arosa in SEAT in the south, 400euro,
same part in SEAT in the north, 160pounds.
take a tdi for the drive up and it costs next to nothing to go up and back.

thats a serious saving.
and thats without thinking about parts from other places like GSF or Eurocarparts,
where some parts can be even cheaper.

Of course you have to bear in mind that unless you are purchasing items for your business then this is fraud, which last time I checked was illegal. How can anyone down south compete against people who are basically defrauding the NI taxpayer out of VAT?

 

thats a fair point geo but at the same time,
even without getting the vat off, you can still save a fortune.

True Alan, I think if you have a job that needs doing that requires partas that are any way expensive go north.
I recently had the timing belt and alternator belt done in my car, I had all the parts for €140 delivered, I was quoted €290 from the stealers down here for the same stuff!

nothing to do with the be-loved vw but its the same with every car company by the sounds of it eg my mother is looking to buy a nissan qashqui +2 ,( trust me i tried convincing her to get a touareg

) she picked up the brouchure from the local dealer and had a flick trough it now im not exactly sure what the extra's are over here and how much they cost but she checked out the u.k dealers and the extra's come as standard and a longer warranty and even with the exchange rate there still a hell of alot cheaper but obviously the higher vat rate has alot to do with that which is ridiculous in my opinion!!

does anyone know if the same type of thing is happening in other countrie's or is it just us ???

On your 3 year warranty claim
THe third year of the warranty in the UK is a dealer warranty and not a VW warranty. You can only return to the supplying dealer with the car. THe extended warranty options are underwritten by 3rd part providors and not VW. Same as buying finance in a vw garage previously wasn't VW (IT may be now with VW bank on stream).

i thought the third year was still covered up north?

 

The third year will be honoured by any UK dealer. It is a VW warranty and not a dealer warranty.

Servise cost over 5 years on a 320d is e690, including pads, belts etc, plus a full warranty and higher residual value.

I knew BMW and Mini service packs were good but is it really that cheap?
Would make a BMW a reasonable alternative if that is the case , a 316d with feck all road tax , low emissions , high mpg and decent residuals. Worth thinking about for sure. Their efficient dynamics cars seem to be great , i seen the new X1 efficient dynamics over at the Frankfurt show last week and it's doin 5.8L/100km. My T5 does 10.7L/100km
So a 316d has 118g iirc , that's €104 per annum road tax and 63mpg or 3.8L/100km

A guy in work had his brakes sieze in a Primera, I can't recall the exact figures but were way higher down south than up north. He told the garage the price and they said thats the price from Nissan Ireland. So he rang Nissan Ireland,they said they weren't a high usage part and agreed to match the NI Price (recession must be starting to bite!!!!)
