firstly, do you think a 1.4 mk4 golf would be able to pull a car transporter with a very light car one it easy enough? any have any experience of pulling stuff with them?

and with genuine vw towbar, will i have to cut a piece out of the rear bumper?

I really don't think the 1.4 in the Golf would be strong enough to pull a Car trailer, let alone a car transporter with a car on it. That's what the TDIs are best for. The clutch wouldn't be up to it at all

The swan-neck tow-bar which most VW garages supply doesn't require the bumper to be cut

Remember, pulling is only part of the job, stopping is the other part. I'd be wary of the effectiveness of the standard brakes on a small car pulling another car, especially one which would exceed the weight of the Golf. It's not recommended to pull anything weighing more than 85% of the pulling car.
