hi all. i am having problems getting my mk 1 1981 golf gti running. i followed it back to a relay which i now know is marked 53 in later mk1s. anyone i've explained it to thinks im half mad i think, but i put the relay number in on the web and came across this link. the link is exactly the same problem im having. even down to the ordering of a new one.

i was told it could be my fuse unit is knackered but i crossed wire through the unit spades where the relay should go an she started not a bother . only prob is u can take the key out and she stays running! haha.

i have emailed the fella in the link but said id post it here an see will anyone have had this issue in the past.
even better still has someone one of these relays with the exact same diagram on it as the pic on the right hand side in the link below.

cheers

the relay with resistor will work if all else is ok,the resistor is fitted to all new OEM relays ,
the side of switching contacts/diag line has no bearing on relay operation as long as its pin 30 & 87 are the switched contacts and are in same position

as geo said if you have tried a known good relay you have a issue with the primary/switching circuit of relay TER 85 & 86

its my first golf lads so bear wit me for being so thick haha. when i put in the 53 relay i get nothin at all at the ignition . but when i put in my original one the fuel pump kicks in an i can take the key out an the pump stays on. so are ter 85 an 86 another relay? again i apoligise. only learing lads!
