Id advise to put his as a named driver under a parents name for the first year or two, then get his own policy after that

It is a few years since I was beginner but at the time Hibernia / aviva had the ignition course recently launched afaik. Anyways they were the cheapest for me at the time. Suggest the ignition course to him. It may have changed since I did it but at the time there was 3 rates of pass (good, medium and pass). Obviously teh better you did the more of a discount you got.
I was 18, just passed driving license, no previous experience, mk2 golf 1.6sd and i cant remember what the premium was but I remember factoring in the discount from the ignition course they were the cheapest.
Tell him to give it a go anyways! It used cost 30 euro to do it which was refunded if you passed (and if he has passed the driving test recently then he should be ok for passing this).

Anyone that has given details above should prob add amount of NCB they have now, it really does make a difference,

This was my details from my first policy

Your Age : 18
Your Car : 00 Seat Leon TDi (90)
Area You Live : Galway
Insurance Company : Axa
Licence : Full (for a year at the time)
Named or Own Policy :Own Policy
Price : 2200 Fully Comp, 6 months named experience,

With Axa Student Policy it does down after 3/6/9 months slighty if no claim approx 5%, but will also go up if there is. You can also pay it off interest free over 12months,

Your Age : 21
Your Car : Octavia MkI vRS
Area You Live : Dublin
Insurance Company : Quinn
Licence : Full
Named or Own Policy : Own
Price : 2100 3rd Party (Yeah I have no money)

I recommend putting them on their own policy as it will stand to them later. Im in college now and have no money, this is my first year on my own name and it costs me the same as it did two years ago as a provisional driver on someone else's name. Where my friends, same age drive bigger cars and have insurance half the price of mine because they have 2-3 years no claims. Just start him small. I totally regret not getting my own policy when I started

When I started driving 5 years ago I paid 2400euro for insurance on a 1.2 punto, I was 18 at the time!

Your Age : 21
Your Car : 1.4 mk4 Golf
Area You Live : Dublin 9

Licence : Full
Named or Own Policy :Own Policy

I have a student policy so i got 20% off and no extra charge for paying monthly, also the no claims discount increases every 3 months so in the end ill pay less than 1000

Your Age : 24
Your Car : MkII vRS
Area You Live : Cork
Insurance Company : Through O Mahony Boylan Golden Broker AVIVA
Licence : Full
Named or Own Policy : Own (Have been on my own policy since I was 17)
Price : €999 Full Comprehensive, 20% No penalty point discount

As stated above I think going on your own policy is the best option for the long run, youll probably be crippled with a hugh premium but itll pay off in the years after.
I remember paying over 3k on a 998cc mini for my first insurance policy on my own name but it dropped off alot in the next year or two.
