Im going to look at a mk4 Golf tomorrow...

Its a 99' GT TDI 110bhp
90K miles
All electrics
Nct til late 07'
3dr with Sports seats.
Priced at 10k ono, so maybe i could bargain him down a bit.

Do ye think this is overpriced or ok ?

If ye think its a decent price have ye any things to look out for, ie. common faults?

Thanks in advance,
Anthony

Don't know much about the golfs really, but at that milage you will be needing a maf meter. It should have at least one timing belt done and maybe a water pump. Has it climatronic? They can be costly if anything is wrong.

Someone here before said that the doors can slouch a bit on 3dr models as their really heavy.

Get a read of the last NCT cert aswell (probably have already but...)
itll tell you a lot about the car.

The water pump should have been done along with the tensioners at 60-65k (same time as the T Belt). Might be worth a call to wherever did it to check.
MAF will only need to be done if it's actually gone. Not really a need to regularly replace them.
As said doors can sag a bit on the 3 door. Whats the service history like on it ? Is it owned by an enthusiast ?
What i'm getting at is the service schedule i suppose..regular is best specially on the TDI's

Other than that all the usual car stuff which I'm sure you know. Get a mate to look as well. It can always help to have someone with more objective view to have a look. Where is the car ? Is it on the web ?
If it's a private sale get at least 500 of that price

They rarely actually "go", but they do get worse over time. From my experience they should be changed every year. If they don't need to be changed, why have the dramatically dropped in price? VW knows they are an issue, and always have been.

My Passat PD130, a MK4 PD115, MK4 PD130, A4 2.5 V6TDI Quattro all seemed to be running ok until we changed the maf. The difference with the new maf was noticable.

yeah but i have also noticed a difference if you just reset them !
We did an experiment one day with 2 MK iv TDi a Skoda TDI and my old Bora TDi (all non PD admittedly). Swapped 2 new mafs in to each of them and all 4 people test drove each of them around a private track (closed off airport road !) and noticed the same difference with the new one as with a maf reset (leave it unplugged for 5-10mins) !
THis was all before VW offered the exchange option and were charging a fortune for them !. One of the Mkiv's and the skoda had them fail within 2 days of each other. Just reckon it's 80 notes you don't need to spend every year ! Thats a nice wack of pints !

My Bora had 105k on it and the non failed MkIV had 125k on it all on the original Maf.

It's up to you at the end of the day !

Thats a trick i might try dec nice , i cleaned my MAF a few weeks ago there was a noticable difference, might try the re-set trick this evening.

Also look at the central locking on the golf thats another bug bear.

Thanks for all the replys...

The car is in Wexford, I seen it on the Autotrader, both net and mag, i'm bringing a friend who knows his way around a car better than i do, i dont think it was owned by an enthusiast as its in its standard state, i'll remember to check to see how the doors open and close, as far as i know the service history is up to date, im not sure how often it was serviced though...

As for the price he says he wont go much lower than 10k

Im going to see it tomorrow evening, i'll try get him lower if the car suits...

When you lock the doors with the remote, make sure the indicators flash. If not then one of the door micro-switches could be faulty (as the indicators wont flash if it thinks something is open). In this care the interior sensors are disabled and the alarm will only sound if a door/boot/bonnet is opened.

BuMp

Lads, i bumped this up to ask another question..

I rang an ad from the Buy and Sell about an 01' TDI, the seller didnt know the bhp but says its TDI

He said he thought it was a 110 but wasnt sure.

Any idea what bhp this is?

I can only go for a 110bhp if i want my insurance to stay decent...

Thanks,
Anthony.

BTW- The GT TDI mentioned in the posted above had no service history and the guy had only owned it a couple of months so it was a no go.

there should be a sticker inside the handbook/service manual and another inside the spare wheel well in the boot with the kw rating of the engine on it along with code for all the stuff it shipped with and the VIN
115bhp is 86kw ish, 110bhp is 82 KW pretty much and 90bhp is 67kw - only way to be sure as the badges can be all over the place ! generally a 01 red DI would be 110 on a golf IIRC - possibly a 115 but i can't rem when they used that engine and in what !!!!!!!

Generally
- TDI = 90bhp
- TDI = 110bhp
- TDI = 130bhp From 2001>
- TDI = 150bhp From 2001>

Afaik the MK4 PD115 was mainly in the UK

If you could stretch to €16500, you could get a PD150 with full VW service history from new, see for sale section
