hey all,

have a 06 Gti.

im sure this has been discusses here before, but i was experimenting with E5 for a while.
i would put in €50 each week and it would do me for the week.

i then decided to switch back to standard unleaded petrol. the car only seems to burn about €40 per week for the same mileage.

the price difference between E5 and 95 is 2cents near me.

i have read a lot about E5 and the general concensus is that its more econimical to run in the Gti than 95.

does that car have to be re-tuned/mapped for E5 ?

i have run both for about 3 Months each.

havent changed my driving style, that i have noticed.

same miles each month, same route to work. M1.

just an observation more than anything, anyone else notice this?

I don't know about a remap but I was reading the manual on an opel corsa I was selling last week and it told of a connector block that you have to reverse over to run her on e5 or 95 - had a look under the bonnet and the block has the different fuels written on either side??

I run my MK2 on Shell V-Power, with a fuel injector cleaner diluted to the tank. I tried E5 just after Christmas and the car didnt like it at all. Felt very sluggish. Maybe its not designed for older engines like mine. So getting it mapped to suit wouldnt be a bad idea...

E5 only benefits Turbocharged cars.......thats were u see it,theres no point of running a N/A car on it.....theres a thread on here somewere about it,it goes it to it all

Edit:::: found the thread http://vagdrivers.net/forums/index.php?sho...&hl=E5+fuel

Nice one Shane, some good info in that thread....

Is the GTI not turbocharged?

indeed it is, i have driven it with lots of revs and little revs, and cant see any difference between it and standard 95. i read a lot of posts about it, and they all say no remap needed, but maybe thats not the case, that or its not really E5......

Graeme : v-power in this country is 95RON with detergent, nearly everywhere else its 99RON.
its something to do with the fact that shell isnt shell here, but a trading name of some fuel company, they own statoil too.

topaz energy bought them, shell and statoil distribution in ireland that is, it sowned/part owned by dennis o brien.

thanks, i was thinking gem or emerald or something along those line.

razor thanks for that link, must remember to run it a few months before the NCT, might be able to sneak into the lower emissions bracket.

see that there is no real diff between E5 and 95RON, apart from lower CO emissions.

thanks.

E5 includes 5% ethanol whch has a lower calorific (i.e. energy) rating than 95 petrol so although the addition of the Ethanol has the (unintended) effect of boosting the octane rating, you are losing on raw energy so after several weeks of filling up with Maxol E5 on my Mk V Golf 1.4 GT 170 PS I can't really say that it performs any better than normal 95. I haven't measured MPG so can't comment on that aspect of it.

I think it's a classic case of swings and roundabouts.

now all shell and statoils are going to be rebranded TOPAZ.

I can't see how running on V power all the time can be advantageous, because it is still 95 octane and is a fair bit dearer... just a tank now and again to 'clean through' the engine would suffice methinks.

Would it make sense that an engine would need to burn more E5 to get the same performance because of it's lower energy value, hense fewer MPG?

I can't say i have noticed a difference in either MPG or performance in the GT, it is really something which can only be proven conclusively through strict experimentation.

I've heard it takes a few tanks of E5 for the ECU to pick up the higgher knock resistance fuel as well. Anyone care to comment on that?

Depending on which forum you read, E5 makes no difference in performance but delivers better MPG, the previous contributor above says that he saw a deterioration of 2-3 MPG but I can't see how you can measure such a tiny difference. I have gone through several tanks of E5 and I really don't think I got any performance improvement.

Last Saturday I went back to normal 95 when I filled up with Esso 95 and since then and a few more top ups I've done 600 miles in four days and I can't say that there was any difference in performance so as far as I'm concerned Maxol E5 doesn't do anything for me and performance.

3mpg is an ~8% difference in fuel economy so it's not that small, especially when your familiar with the car.

With the E5 the throttle response is much better, when you touch the throttle it goes, compared to with normal fuel which had a slight lag.

It may have a larger effect on some cars, but I prefer the way the car feels with it

Plus around where I live it's one of the cheapest garages, and I never liked to mix fuel brands (I don't really know why) unless in a pinch.

The MK5 GTI is running around 11psi Boost, which basically isnt that high. When remaped (not for E5 but for high boost) then E5 or any high RON would make a big difference and shouldnt change MPG (as less fuel is dumped to cool the combustion process to combat knock). Pity I sold the S4 (22PSI twin turbo) before E5 was rolled out.

I've used E5 in the Cabrio for the first fews weeks and have switched back to regular as I find it to be a bit easier on juice now.
