Passed A Salt Spreader Last Night And Destroyed Front Of My Car, What To Do?

So I'm driving down the N2 Ashbourne road last night doing some logging. I noticed an awful amount of salt on the road, a lot more than usual. When I passed a truck I couldn't get over the amount of salt he was spraying up.

Anyway I got further up the road and caught up with the salt spreading truck. He was fairly moving for a salt spreader, Id say he was doing about 100km/hr (I was doing 120) and as I went to pass him the front of my car got sprayed with a hail of salt. It was like rocks hitting my car. I had no choice but to keep moving past as if I had of slowed back down I would have gotten hit with more salt.

I pulled into the petrol station at the end of the motorway and the front of my car is destroyed. Paint chips everywhere. I'm absolutely bulling! He had to be going too fast when he was spreading salt as it spraying higher than the roof of my car!

I was wondering what do you think lads. Is it worth getting on to Meath County Council?

There was another lad with me in his car and the front of his car is destroyed too.

Jeez where were they when we needed them when roads were really bad in January?

no idea how you'd fair out with a claim. It will be your word(s) against his in terms of speed and whether the salt made such impact. What's speed limit in the area?

They may also argue given circumstances why were you not a safe distance behind if you spotted the salt that high.

Good luck with it anyway.

Who you telling Mike. I see them out most nights now coming home from my girlfriends house. Mostly when there not needed too...

The speed limit on the motorway is 120km/hr.

I don't know if your familiar with the road but most of it is unlit and it was only when I got up beside him and in the middle of the 'hail storm' that I realised it was spraying so high.

Just to clarify I was on the North road motorway not the ashbourne road. 2 lanes not 1.

I'd be complaining too!!

I Always try and avoid them but got caught out last week with one heading the opp direction.

More stone chips than I'd care for now albeit small ones. Only option is to leave it a while and get it re-sprayed.

Same thing happened to my brother Friday night coming down from Dublin, wreaked the front of his 09 golf. Dont know if anything can be done?

Know the road well and a similar thing happened to me but with no noticeable dammage thank god...!!! I'd be straight onto the council though about it...you didn't catch the reg of the truck just for a little extra proof aside from the front of your car obviously!!!

Im going to ring MeathCC now in a few and see what they say. I didnt get the reg unfortunatley, didnt want to let him go by me again only to get another shower of salt

After I pulled in the garage I figured he was probably going back up the other side of the road so I was hoping to get his reg then but there was no sign of him once I got back on the road....

That's unfortunate that you didn't get it...might have given you a little leverage!!!

Let us know how it pans out...!!!

When i see them coming i always pull over and stop until they have gone by . I do notice they do fly in these trucks. They obviously want to get the job done and go home..

thats an understatement,
i've seen them flat out accross bad junctions and at roundabouts with cars around.
not smart considering the grit is spread behind so if there was an incident, the tyres would still slide.

(not that theres any ice to slide on anymore.)

Tried ringing them twice yesterday with no luck. Ill try again today as I was too busy yesterday to keep stepping out on the phone.

I gave it a wash last night as well and it doesnt actually seem too bad. There are some nasty stone chips alright but not as many as I thought I had seen on Sunday eve.

Ill still ring to see if I get anywhere as damage was still caused. But I doubt there going to entertain me.

"yes sir, the truck did what?! Send me an estimate for the damage and we'll get a cheque out to you asap. Now if you kindly ring this number to file an official complaint 1800-FUCKOFF. "

Yep heartbraking stuff. What retards are driving them at that speed anyway spraying salt into the air? And I think the the amount of salt/grit sprayed is proportional to the speed the heap of junk is going so I can only imagine one at 100+km/hr.
