I've watched the video twice now and still can't tell what exactly happens. I saw a bit on the news earlier aswell.

My opinion on the protesters is I think very little of them tbh. I worked and paid my own way through 4 years of college. There was students on the news crying over how their parents won't be able to afford to put them through college. Why can't they work during all the holidays they get and pay their own way? I hated these types of students when I was in college, spent half their time whinging and complaining.

Was the exact same, spent all days off getting dogged out of it on a building site when other lads in my class never had a job,

A lot of them have no interest in earning a wage and daddy will pull in a few favours to get them into a job somewhere cushty.. no hard work for them cunts

QUOTE (jon_95 @ Nov 3 2010, 08:59 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>fair enough is "mammy and daddy" put you through college but I struggled to put myself through college on far less fee then they will be after the budget. and doing 20-30 hours work a week on top of a 40hour week in college (which many of us non "mammy and daddy" folk had to do) wouldn't sustain me anymore and now in a world where student loans are getting next to impossible to get.

sympathies to the people who take college seriously. is only we could filter out the "mammy and daddy" ppl some other way. heaven forbid we just cancel all "arts" degrees nationwide

I just think there has to be another solution.

Means tested

Families who can afford to pay, do..

Well getting a job is easier said than done. That said tho if people cant afford to go to collage they will more than likely end up on the dole so its going to cost the government either way.

I cant make out much from that video, but I what I can see is a pretty straight forward protest, and a pretty well organized riot control team.

I dont agree with the fee's purely from a graduate's view, but I spoke to a friend from the uk today who mentioned theyre fee's will be up to 9000str next year.

If the government what to up the price of college, it will happen, the protests arent going to make much of a difference at this stage. Maybe a few years back when the country wasnt up to its bald patch in debt but now, its inevitable.

Have to agree Alan, Just thought it was interesting that it was posted on youtube as police Brutality when its not clear at all what's going on.

And in fairness I'd put myself through college before even considering letting my parents pay for it but @2500- €3000 a year would be a fair bit to pay on top of the rest even with a part time Job. I can see a lot of people who've lost jobs and finding it hard to get another being prohibited from Starting college that way,

I say this as someone who is considering going back to 3rd level after My 4th year of steady work after the Leaving and no sign of that drying up. Touch wood

its exactly the sort of video that the likes of indymedia love to be honest. cant see shit, and then when a baton is swung, its caught perfectly on camera.

What a stupid statment to make. Imagine a 3 children family with a single parent how are you suppost to put three children true 3 to 5 years of college.

What are people in college going to do if they "up the price of fees" ? if we cant get educated while there is no jobs to be had its clearly something that has to be worried about and addressed so your comment of "they didnt hit them half hard enough" gives the general view of just how narrow minded people are in this country! !! If it is introduced its just going to end in more people on the Dole which in turn will cost Government the same amount if not more in long run!
Its lack of Education that got us in this mess with the people who are running/ruining the country so education is the only way forward if we dare stand a chance in getting out of the mess we are in any time soon!

Been Told by a few students that were at the protests that it was a 'political group' involved in that and not the majority of it. I think you can see in the way the camerawork was done that it was meant to look a lot worse than it was. Just what I'm being told. Could be wrong.....

Well said, I've heard all this "I've worked my way through col" bullshit before but everyone who said that in this thread did it at less than 3000 euro! I marched today and I'm not ashamed to say that, not just for myself and my education but for others who didnt have a half day and are busy in college, but I wasnt even there for this occupation of the dept. of finance bullshit...that was done by a bunch of muppets

As for working your way through col, I've never asked my parents to pay for my education but unlike some I spend my summer working for my father at home and recieved enough to pay my rent for the year!! I did extra work with a local so I can buy a few things (phone) and run my car

As far as the video is concerned what i see is men in riot gear hitting people sitting on the ground not people attacking back...whether the general behaviour of the Gardai today was acceptable I dont know because I was there and neither we're most giving their opinions in this thread

QUOTE (Kylemalee @ Nov 3 2010, 09:18 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>it shouldnt be free.. Wr a small country, the tax payer shouldnt have to pay...

But if the tax payer does pay would it not be seen as an investment?

i.e. college educated workers statistically make more therefore generating more taxes for the country. also reducing the likelihood of people ending up in the dole Ques too?

To be fair people who are in 2nd year and above attend all, only place is where you will find people not showing up is mainly in 1st year students and alot actually drop out at that stage for reasons maybe course not for them, not been able to afford fees and accommodation etc etc! If it goes up tho clearly you can see my point that without 3rd level education that if introduced most wont be able to afford this country stands no chance in getting out of current mess! And apologies for any personal insults btw!

This is true.. Some people are using the recession as an excuse.
