Garda Planning Clampdown On Modified Cars

QUOTE An Garda Síochána is planning a clampdown on cars that are fitted with tinted windows and loud exhausts.

The Gardaí recently put advertisements up on the government e-tenders website seeking equipment that will enable them to conduct roadside exhaust-noise level and glass-tint tests on cars. At present, the maximum permitted exhaust noise on cars is 80 decibels; however, the Gardaí believe that most modified cars fitted with aftermarket exhaust systems exceed this limit. Similarly, Irish law states that the natural light/tint ratio in car windows must be at least 75/25 percent in windscreens and 70/30 percent in passenger windows. If caught with exhausts or tinted windows that exceed the legal limits, motorists will be warned by the Gardaí to put their vehicles right. If these warnings are ignored, however, motorists convicted in court can face fines of up to €2,500, or a possible three months in prison. Speaking about the new initiative, Assistant Garda Commissioner Eddie Rock said loud exhausts and tinted windows are "all part of the boy racer buzz." Garda Rock also said that modified car enthusiasts will have the opportunity 'to rectify their cars.'

Cops back home are bastards about tinted windows the reason is they can't see inside the car especially at night so if they pull you over they are in more danger of getting shot etc. Sometime you can avoid them ticketing and stripping your tint off if you roll your windows all the way down when they pull you over. As for the exhaust rules, as long as they have a legal decibel limit and stick to it, I agree with it, if they use the testing equipment. Unfortunately they don't always do this and I know people who have gotten tickets for a stock exhaust...it seems fair that they give you a warning and a chance to fix it....here's a real big question though, will motorcycles be affected? Cops in the U.S. seem to completely ignore the asshats who ride around on straight piped Harleys that are loud enough to make your ears bleed.

ya better expand on the "etc" bit because I've never heard such a ridiculous excuse... sure they'd never deliver a summons if that was the case... you never know if there's a shotgun behind that front door!!!

Oh, well thats fair enough. I have a habit of rolling the windows all the way down whenever i pulled up anyways. Yeah i agree about the two wheelers, but there not as common as acne faced micheal schumakers in there fiestas/civics. I think they should enforce the decibal limit but only during certain hours, say 23.30-6.00.

OK, they don't know if you have a can of mace...a rabid dog, a sexy girlfriend, a knife, are reaching for your machete, stashing your drugs, beating your sexy girlfriend, flogging the dolphin, or having sex with your rabid dog.

Basically a car with really dark tint is a rolling mystery and increases the danger to police when they pull you over and let's be frank...do you really need tinted windows here? The blazing sunlight is unlikely to burn you.

i understand the idea of front two windows and windscreen but the rear 3 shouldnt have any limit, sure if you have a van you cant see shit anyway.
as for the exhausts, i cant imagine a factory option would get you convicted in court if you could proove it was a factory option etc.

Maybe its because you cant see anything out of the windows. I bought a coralla a few years back with tinted windows used to have the roll the things down to see out at junctions if it was anything other than a bright clear day.

I think you can go darker on the rear windows?

What I would like to know is, are they going to use a light metre? How they going to gauge it if not?

I have been in cars that it was nearly impossible to see out the side windows, rolling them down just to see out (in the daylight)

Another reason that I would welcome a restriction on tints (on front windows at least) is that you can't predict the driver's intentions, for example in the scenario where you are driving on a main road and a car is preparing to pull out of a side road just ahead of you, it's reassuring to see if he/she is looking in your direction. If they have dark tints, you have no clue of what they're going to do.

Seconded, tinted windows have to be one of the most pointless mods in a country like Ireland. Although they do help in that I dont get a chance to see the minging 15 year old knacker in the passenger seat, so I suppose theyre better for my eyes.

QUOTE (Alan B. @ Aug 22 2009, 09:14 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>read the first post again dude

LOL and I posted it...

But will all cars carry one or will they have specificaly trained guards that would do it, will it be like you have to turn up at a certain station to get it tested or will they call out the trained guard? I doubt every patrol car would be equiped with one, would they?

Wouldn't it be better and cheaper to do it during the NCT test?

it would but then you'd just have people with tints after the nct is passed.

it depends what equipment they get, if its a small device, it could be given to each station and it would be brought out in the cars.
i'd say every guard would be trained in it if that is the case,

or it could be a machine at the station that would mean bringing the car back there.
(theres already similir laws that give powers for cars to be brought places like trucks and weigh bridges for example)
if its a big machine i'd say one station in 3 might have one, the main station in the district for example

in that case it would probably be some guards that are trained not all.
it all depends on what piece of equipment is got and how the testing is done with that bit of kit.

where do they stand on things like Evo V,VI, ... with factory fitted exhausts? they are loud, but not aftermarket?

oh, and are limo's tints illegal then?

About measuring the db level of an exhaust.

The guards could have the most accurate meter in the world but it will show different readings dependent on where the level is measured. To do this correctly they would have to have a standardised location and a set distance from the car/exhaust where the level is measured.

You can imagine testing a car in a narrow lane between buildings, this is going to sound much louder then a level measured in the open.

I can see many a court case being thrown out based on this.
