i think the brake valve at the back under the axle needs to be held back with a cable tie then bleed them.i'd the same troble with the mk1 the time i changed lines and calipers a man told me that an it worked great

because there is coilovers fitted and having them so low the brake bias valve isn't moving so i pulled it back and tied it in place like dan said and it seemed to work.

i than tackled the clutch to bleed that but no joy with this i spent a good hour trying to bleed it,
i had the fluid topped up all the time had someone pumping but it wont bite at all just hits the floor
any ideas lads

QUOTE (mycroft @ Jan 30 2010, 07:17 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Two things..

1 Check the master cylinder for a bleed screw...dont think there shold be one on a rado but check anyway

2 Make sure you've fitted the calipers the right way up...yes it is possible to fit them wrong...the bleed screw should be pointed upwards..not towards the ground.

no bleed screw on master cylinder, and the bleed niples are on top so its not a problem

I found the best way to make sure it's done right is to change the colour of your fluid.
ie: change clear/brown fluid for some blue and verse/vise.

This way you know for sure that you have fluid all the way to the caliper/slave cylinder.

I fitted bigger disks front and rear disks to the back of my mk1. Also fitted bigger vacuum servo and 22mm master cylinder. I forgot to bench bleed the m/c. I have very spongy pedal now. Brakes work fine and stop the car much better now. A lot of travel in the pedal and very spongy. Has anyone any suggestions? How do I bleed the m/c properly? or am I being a complete idiot and missing something obvious?

thanks,

Dermot

...if there is a lot of travel in the pedal its possible that the linkage needs adjusting; something often overlooked...

Im more familiar with caddy's but Ive read somewhere that mk1' golf saloons have 'porportioning' valves that screw into the bottom of the stock m/c's outlets; sending greater pressure to the front, since thats where all the weight is -I'd check your old m/c for these and refit them to the upgraded m/c...
