Folks,

I've been driving my brothers car the past 2 weeks as he's away on hols so I thought I'd give the Golf a break. Anyway he had said to me that he was having to top up the coolant about once a week. So I did as he was saying but the past few days I'm now topping her up every day. Theres no visable leak that I can see. Theres no wet patch ont he ground where shes parked. So I cant figure out where the damn stuff is going but one sure thing its going somewhere. the Coolant light comes on in the dash to warn its going low. Luckily I have been very near a filling station every time. The Temp gauge stays normal. Any ideas whats wrong? Oh and as I dont have coolant handy I am suing ordinary water.

Cheers,
Mark

Will try that tomorrow Tom. Cheers

Could also be the head gasket. Give the car a good dart then pull over, turn off the engine and pop the bonnet. If you can hear the pressure relief valve in the coolant cap venting, then its either the valve or head gasket.

i had the same problem with my a4 1.8t when hot or cold no leak. was told head gasket but compression test perfect was on audi site and they reckon the turbo can burn off some amount of water but i doubth it could do it every day unless it from a scania or something. my one needs water every 3 weeks or so and the light comes on for a second when hard around a bend and goes off again. its only a week after that it stays on. tried it with water in boot just to see how long it took.get some novaleak its top stuff used it on rally car a lot and its surprising the size of crarcks and holes it can fill.(that last bit sounds bad i know)its about 15-20euro for bottle but worth it.

Well did a bit more investigating on Sunday after the long haul. Pulled off the cover over the engine and had a look all around the head and cant see nothing. Same around the rad not a drop to be found anywhere. Shes off to the garage during the week so hope he finds something. Time will tell.......
