As some of you already know I bought Georges 16v golf gti. As soon as I got it home it was straight into the garage for work to begin. I took a few pictures of the main bodywork that needs doing, nothing too difficult at all, plenty to get my teeth sunk into.

There is also a slight dent in the passenger door.

the boot carpet needs a good scrub:

the boot was leaking through the right rear light, so I sealed that up and cleaned the boot floor:

Soggy door cards!

Last of all I polished the undamaged panels to see if I could justify painting them too, I think the front came up well. There are a few light scratches and stone chips, but that wouldn't bother the likes of me!

Ok well watch this space, no doubt I'll be dumping alot of money into this project and posting alot of pointless photos!

What plans have you got in mind for it Conor

Nothing mad, fix bodywork, sensible lower on coilovers, 4 branch with S/S system, deep dish rims of some sort, leather interior

Cheers Doc, no plans on selling the GTD I'm still driving it full time, have plans for that too, have G60 arches to go on and a few bits of tidying, need to get it ready for NCT.

I have a good set of door cards Conor, meant to give them to you with the car but forgot. You going to the Gandon?

that would be great george, I'm not going to the Gandon meet though, exams... i'm sure I'll get down to you at some point though
Image

Will do Kieran, you might throw up a few pictures of your own project too?

I had a day off today so I started rubbing down the back panel and back quarters, such a pain in the arse to sand laquer! I also compounded and polished the roof and it came out grand so I'm not going to get that resprayed. ( thank fuck!)

No problem, they are there for you anyway. It's just the front ones you need I'd say, the rears are probably fine. From your pictures it looks like the plastic membranes are missing from the doors hence the soggy door cards. Make sure and fit new plastic before putting on the good door cards or they'll end up the same way as the old ones!

Today I rubbed down the car a bit more and took off the two rear wheel arch extensions to see what was underneath. To say I was relieved would be a huge understatement

Not a single speck of rust, Ditto the far side.

Should have the car prepped and ready for paint early next week.

yup will do, was thinking of cutting some heavy duty polythene to size and sealing it all around the edges
Image

You can get rolls of foam door liner specially for replacing door membranes, its a waterproof foam with a self adhesive backing that you cut to size and stick on, leaves a nice finish behind the door panel, anally retentive I know

Oh I am I'm under pressure to get it out of the garage because there are more cars to come in!
Gearoid where would I buy this visually appealing door membrane?!

I can probably sort you out with some if you only need it for a few doors, I have some here that I bought for the G40's makeover but I'll have more than I need.

Good job so far conor! Really missin the long cold angry greasy wet garage nites over there now seeing that, well maybe not that much....

I almost have the car ready for a respray. I am not respraying the front wings, bonnet, passenger door(Despite small dent, maybe later), lower front valance and roof as the paint is very good already.
Here are some photos of the work so far.

The only bits of "serious" rust I have encountered were on the boot door and shut panel:

This lip is usually under a seal, it will be ground down, treated overnight and plated.
Image

All rust on tailgate ground back and treated overnight. The two bolt holes that have "increased" in size will be plated and then filled.

I hope to have it resprayed some time next week.
