I need two of my Zenders refurbed, anyone recommend any place in Leinster or a little bit further even

There seems to be mixed results around Murr.

I've used Collins and A27.

Go local, be painfully explicit about what you want done, get a sample wheel done before all 4 and pay no money until all wheels fully inspected and you are satisfied.

Collins in bray have done mine and I find them really good

It was Collins who done them a few weeks ago hence the need to get them redone. Bring 2 spares to the show in Larne next weekend and drop them into NuLuk on the way home. The finish they left on James' BBS is untouchable by any other refurber in this country imo. Still as Mike says , hand over no cash till you've got perfection

If that's the case, I'd insist on them rectifying them or pay for the rework.

He did Mike , they gave them back in only ok condition unfortunately. Bray is too far away from Mullingar to be driving over and back and giving them a third shot at it in my opinion. I've had the same experience with my RMs and Alfa with his LMs. He got some guys in Longford i think to rectify his. Sad to hear it , they have the equipment to make them the best in the country but the finishing is just not up to scratch. Liam did assure me that he is working on this and i hope he does as the north is a fair spin too

Cheers for the feedback guys,i had nuluck in mind but wanted to see if theirs anyone more local to go to.

Was very disapointed with collins, the damage was very minor, just a small scuff and when i got the wheel back it was covered in overspray, runs in the lacquer and lacquer over tar.

I think guys in fairness to Collins or any other wheel "specialist" it's a 2 way deal. You have to put the effort in too.

There is a big difference in our expectations as enthusiasts versus mass market Joe Bloggs types - "I nicked the edge on my wheel can you repair it and give it a quick spray".

Yes in either case there has to be a certain level of quality and if it falls short of that the onus is on the vendor to address at their cost but we or most of us are looking for show or close to show standard wheels and you have to work with these guys to achieve that. Show wheels is still emerging in this country and not at the levels in some other countries so the local providers still have a way to go to get to those standards. There is undoubtedly a gap in the market for a local professional service.

When I had my MK2 RS2000 Escort it had 4 spoke RS alloys. Most guys back then just sprayed them. Inspired by what I was seeing at some car meets up North I took mine to a company who polished brass poles for pubs and had the lads buff them like mirrors for about 10 pounds per wheel ! Times have changed - mirror polishing, powder coating, pin striping etc etc etc and some of these techniques are complex to do and as they are only happening in reasonably low volumes not many have sufficient local experience.

I had my 911 BBS wheels done by Collins and was happy "in the end" but it took some effort on my behalf to get there and they (Liam and Mark) really wanted to get there with me. I didn't put time pressure on them as I was more interested in the final product.

I had my Pirellis for my MK1 done by A27 up North and it too took 2 attempts and several hundred miles back and forth !

My next set will be the Zender Turbos and as I want them mirror polished they will be shipped to UK as there is no one I am aware of that has the local experience or tooling in Ireland.

Wheels in my view go a long way to making a car work aesthetically so it's worth taking your time selecting and working with the right company for you.

I had my one of my new wheels done at collins to. Not happy with results. Ask for slight kerb scuff (3cm long) to be taken out. I thought it was a small job. got the wheel back, wanted to cry!! Totally removed outter bevel on the polished lip. When i brought the wheel in at the start i asked what would be done to the wheel, got a blank look back and told its nothing major and should be fine. Well their 'fine' and my fine aint the same. If someone cant do the job right, they should just say so, no harm done. Would never go back again.

i had a set done in collins about 3 months ago , the car hasn't left the driveway ,already the lacquer is lifting .the car hasn't been on the road yet,i taught the finish of the clear coat was a bit rough ,but didnt say so at the time ,he also fu**ed up the black detailing in the spokes ,ground out to much in some places right down til it dissapeared .But being typically irish we dont complain enough.he'll be getting them back when i get a set of wheels to put on the car.

I'm glad i read all this about Collins,i thought they were up to par,Nulook seems to be the place to go,i didn't see the BBS they did on his 530 and i was fairly impressed with that job, plus Stans are A1.

Its a bit of a trek though!

As i said before and will say again and again, collins engineering are not up to par or anywhere near it in fact.

I left my very rare RH wheels in to get the 3" lip diamond cut, they polished it taking away the edge of the lip, laquered it even though i said don't and the finish on the paint was unbelievably bad. i didn't even take them out of the van.

I took time off work to drop the wheels back and explained what i wanted for the 3rd time to them and left them at it.

3 weeks later i rang up about collecting them, they still weren't ready.

When i collected them they weren't much better than they were the first time but they weren't getting another go.

I had one of my/razors Audi TT comps which i had just polished in my garden, in the back of the van when i went to collect them and he wanted to know how i could get such a good finish on them. These guys are supposed to be alloy wheel repair professionals and they never heard of a polishing mop and wax kit.

Iwouldn't let them near anything of mine again.

God, I'm glad I read this too, this Collins place is gettin' a right throttlin' here!

So what's the wheel doctor in Tipp like then - price, quality etc? And Nulook - I googled this & I got a hairdressers in Craigavin?!? Anyone got a link for these lads, and again, what are they like for price & quality?

Cheers,
Louis

To be fair , i cant see how anyone can guarantee lacquer over a polished finish. However there are products out there which is for that application which have an etch primer as part of the system. Afaik Collins dont use this product. Did they say that they'd guarantee them?
