What Tyre Pressure?

hey guys,

Decided to check my tyre pressures there yesterday. On the tyre it said max psi 49. The tyre itself was at 30 so I pumped them up to 40 to if there any noticeable difference. The handling has improved but the ride quality has gone down. Tis very hard now. So I'm gonna drop it back down to 35 later see if it's any better. Just wondering though how would I find out what the recommended tyre pressure should be?

Tires are 225/40 R18

i have mine at 34psi 225/45/17 i find this best, not too hard and keeps sole of tyre flat.

yeah i lowered it to 33-34psi yesterday. Its much better now.

Whats the story with bigger wheels though. Should the PSI stay the same on a 16" as an 18" on the same car?

Inside the fuel filler door it says it should be 1.9bar front and back.

49psi is the max the tyre is rated for, it shouldn't be taken as a suggested value to run at!!

Tyre pressures shouldn't vary massively with different wheel sizes.

Maybe ask one of the anniversary model owners on here to check their fuel flap for the proper tyre pressure as they run 18s from the factory

Mine is on the inside of the fuel filler cap. I run 34psi all round and it seems to be a good trade off between comfort/handling/economy. If I've a full boot and people in the back going on a run, I'll inflate all round to 36psi to compensate. (those 1.9tdis are a heavy lump)

Hypermilers are advocating add 5% to the recommended running pressure - you'll not notice any ride difference and the tires will roll easier getting you better mileage. ---- Anyone try this?

5% is not going to make a huge difference. 30 psi + 5% = 31.5 psi
try running 33 psi front and 30 psi rear.
fully laden 35 psi all round.

I have 225-40/18 on my 05 GTi and I have played around with all types of pressures and found 37psi in the front and 36psi in the back works very well. The grip is a lot better nad the wear is even. Not a hugh difference in ride either.

I put in 30-32 all round. 32 in the rear when carrying a bit of weight in the boot

Does the car not roll alot on corners?

QUOTE (Declan @ Jul 23 2008, 09:10 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Official VW rating on my anni is 2 bar front and 1.9 bar back for light loads
so that's 29 psi front and 27.5 psi rear !

Seems ill just have to play around with varying pressures see what suits. Its at 33-34 at the mo and seems to be fine. Handles really well. Id like it to be a bit softer but dont want to sacrifice handling. ( i like throwing it into the aul corner now and again)

@davkav,not really...it used kinda hobble on bumpoy corners, meaning the back end felt loose.now running under pressure,it runs grand.no roll and easy on the bumps...no tyre wear, although im sure im not helping my fuel economy any....
