as it says in the title the temp is fluctuating. the car warms normally from cold all the way up to 90 deg, as it always did. lately though it goes back down to 70ish after a few miles and then back up again. sometimes it stays up at 90 the second time and other times it goes down and stays.

there is coolant in it. and the car heats inside normally.

any ideas?

Having the very same problem on the girlfriends 98 A4 1.6. Heats up normal but on a journey it can drop down to nearly cold then back up.
On a long trip it's up and down like a whore's knickers

Could it be the thermostat? Even though you said it heats up normally, can't think of anything else that would cause it to fluctuate. I presume you would hear the fan if it was cutting in?

Was watching this thread for info. On the Passat TDi I had in, the stat made no differance. Fan running perfect, no overheating or coolant loss, Car absolutly perfect in every way. Next to try is a temp switch, just a poss.

The needle should move to fast for normal temperature change
