Fairly rare engine if i understand correctly, also one of the most expensive vw ever developed. I've only ever seen two w8's on the road.
Reading there on vwvortex, they seem to give lots of expensive cam timing trouble..

Only 280ish from a 4.0 i think, not exactly supercar material, but it is the basis for the bugatti veyron engine..

thats a cool link!! i love W engines. the w8 engine is supposed to be a bit of a pup though. i was speaking to a canadian guy in france last year and he was saying they put them in Phaetons for a short while, apparently give some sort of oil level trouble. i also read on UKPASSATS that they have to have an oil change every 5k, thats a noticable amount of cash every year!!!! totally worth it though.

Vector had an unreliable W8 engine back in the 80's i think. could be wrong.

Think he was getting confused. Ive never heard or read about a W8 engine in the Phaeton, nor does it make sense next to the other engines. The W8 "project" was a generation before the Phaeton.
The early Phaetons had the VR6 3.2L engine. The only other engines were the 3.0 V6 TDI, 4.2 V8, 5.0 V10TDI and 6.0 W12. The W12 is still available in the Phaeton, the V6 petrol dropped and the V8 effectively killed off too (it was more popular stateside, they didnt get either V6 engine, so the V8 was the entry model) and the V10TDI was pulled (still in Touareg though) as they couldnt/wouldnt rework it to meet emission requirements.

Bentley Publishers own the rights to reproduce and sell these documents:
http://www.bentleypublishers.com/isbn/VX28/index.html
$199 and all yours!

or..

Do a search for "VW Audi" on your favorite Torrent site, you might find something. Not that I (we) condone doing anything more than looking at such sites..

i didnt know they put it in there either. but i presumed he was telling the truth. he said they only did it for a while. canada is wierd for VW's, they dont even get the r32 over there. strange.

I have seen a few of them look good and a few parts transplants to normal models pulled off but generally I think they're ugly,
the city jetta just looks like a bora with part of a passat stuck on, although the rear can be made work on a normal model and look quit nice!
