Anyone know that "W" button is Clarkeson was giving out about in his test drive of the new GT.
Seen one in the new 170 TDI in a showroom and asked the salesman, he didnt know!! Tis beside the ESP button. Is it something to do wiht winter driving?

QUOTEThe W button on the Golf GT stands for the Winter Program, which reduces power and torque in 1st and 2nd gear. Since he did not have a clue what the button did I think we can assume that he drove around in "W" mode all the time, hence the poor performance and jerkiness.

Clarkeson couldn't find a mention of it in the manual. I think only the more powerful cars have it.

It wasn't in my manual either but a little supplement booklet came with the GT 170 that had all it's unique features and it was in that.

Clarkeson's review of the car confirmed my suspicions that he is a giant walking arse. If you read it, he spends more time bitching about the traffic and weather and local people than he does talking about the car, which he only mentions near the end with a few sketchy details.

It's pretty obvious he went home and wrote the review when he was still fuming, which in fairness is a really bad way to write a review.

Sure all of Clarksons reviews in the Times are the same, he goes on about the state of Britain or the good old days for 90% of the article. Most of them are not really reviews but colour pieces that give a small indication of his opinion of a car at the end. I still think he's entertaining to read and watch.

Ah yeah you're probably right doyler.

Still it is a bit unfair though to use a perfectly good car as a vehicle (pardon pun) for venting your repressed fury at the state of.. whatever (country, roads etc).

Ah I'm just peed off cause I own one!

the book he has out this year is a collection of his car reviews and its hillarious trying to guess in each review how far in it'll be before he actually starts talking about the car in question.

its standard clarkson, he'll go on about how the car is excellent but he'd never buy it cos its crap, or the opposite that its crap in every way but he'd buy one cos it's excellent.

take his reviews with a pinch of salt, i'm pretty sure he does

I set the W switch on a few mornings this winter but the performance is totally crap when the engine is cold so it's probably best to leave it off and go easy on the right foot when accelerating and cornering in bad weather.

I'm thinking the W switch is a gimmick, or at least for this country! Still trying to figure out how its different from ASR? Doesn't that slow the driving wheel under slippage, the W button apparently reduces engine power? Is its purpose to save fuel because the engine wont rev so much?

As for Clarkson I agree all his written reviews are minimal and for the best part pointless. I've read loads of reviews on the new GT and his is the only one slating the car! For a man who hales the Veyron as an engineering milestone you'd of thought the GT would of struck a similar cord (albeit on a lesser note!!!)with its performance, economy, emission price etc!

W button is for setting tyre pressure, after putting the right pressure into each tyre hit this button to set and if the pressure drops enough the symbol appears on the dash to let ya know .

Thank you! I thought I was going mad, I have a 'W' button

I ordered this as an extra - the symbol showed up on the dash on 2 separate occassion's letting me
know of a slow puncture before I hit d'rim

Errr, no it isn't!! The 'W' button is on the TSI's or GT Sports or whatever they're calling them now, and it's supposed to be used to increase traction in "winter" conditions, I think by reducing throttle power, not quite sure.

The tyre pressure monitor button is a separate button entirely (standard on GTI's), it has a tyre-like symbol on it and "Set".

Could be right bout the GT,but he did say is located beside the esp button which it is on my Mark 5 Gti and from
any distance closer the 2mm looks like a W and not the symbol that it is, was handy last night when pressure was low on all tyres after alot miles over xmas.
