Vw Main Dealer Will Not Even Quote For A Trade In?

Sent an email to 'Commons Road Cars' today regarding a R32 they have in stock with a view to trading in my passat and got this response:

Thank you for your enquiry.
Unfortunately at this time we would not be able to offer a trade in deal as we are over-stocked with secondhand cars at the moment.
Apologies for not being able to deal .

How does this make any sense? Trading in an 8k car for an 18k car gives them 10k cash!!

So now volkswagen won't even take their own cars as trade-ins?

From their website:

Thank you for choosing to visit our website. Commons Road Cars Ltd is the leading supplier of Volkswagen cars and vans in the Meath area and Northeast. Please use this site to research new cars and new commercials, check our stock of used cars, order parts, or request car servicing. While we have indicated prices on the site, we would welcome the opportunity to quote you personally on your requirements particularly if you have a trade-in.

May be worth your while to ring them..

But it does make sense if they are selling a car but taking in a new car to replace it that isnt freeing up room in there yard any bit and could possibly delay new car deliveries. its all about storage room really

Ring them or call in. Email them about a trade in is not the best way for them to take you serious.

its strange alright; you'd think, even if they hadnt 'the space' for the passat, they'd have some agreement with another VW dealer, or other, in another part of the country to have the Passat on their forcourt/sell it on within the 'trade'; this is the practice in UK and other countries...

strange. i was lookin at trading in to a vw main dealer the other day and not only did they want to trade they offered me more for my car then i'd prob get on donedeal.

I gave tons of information and pictures in my email including work and mobile phone numbers,so I can't accept he did not take me seriously. He could have just as easily said 'give me a call' or something. I didn't suggest any values so he could have come back at me with anything he wanted.

I don't get this overstocck or no room argument as I am not asking him to buy my car outright , or trading in a car of greater value, he is reducing his stock value and getting cash in the bank. I don't think the physical space saved of a golf -vs- a passat could prevent a sale?

The guy answering the emails is probably driving the R32 at the weekends?

I'm sure the Passat will be easier to shift too.

I'd say that definitely would be the case, much more demand for a Passat than an .:R! Bit mad alright. Might be worth dropping in to them and see what they say face to face

That R32 caught my eye this morning actually. And theyve beem trying to clear alot of stock the last few weeks, some cheap enought cars ( for a dealer). But still, yes i dont understand why they wouldnt want 10k and a good passat that will sell quick.

Could there be more to this than meets the eye? If, for instance, they were in liquidation or something, they would want rid of any stock possible and not want trade-ins....?

How much is it to tax this car under the new tax bracket post July 2008 ??

OP , if i were buying an R32 then i would shop around other main dealers.
I only had a discussion the weekend with a guy who had the same experience as i twice had.
Called in , tried to deal , was told i'd receive a call with figures and never had the return call.

My mother in law bought a car from there last year [cash buyer with no trade in] and they still even managed to fcuk that deal up too.

Their sales department were very good in the late 90's and early 00's but when Pauraig departed to TMC and the younger generation came in the whole think changed for the worse imo.

To be fair to them , Bobby in service and the lads in parts are very knowledgable and i'd have know hesitation in recommending them but their sales department are a disgrace to the Volkswagen brand

Just had a look at this. In fairness, its a pretty good price for what looks a really nicely specced R32. My guess is that he has already taken a knock on the price and is therefore selling it with small margin left. Unfortunatley, a Passat 2.0 FSI will be just as hard, possibly even harder to shift as 99% of people buying Passats are obsessed with diesel so the rarity of the R32 might work in his favour. Speaking as someone in the buisness myself, unfortunatley not all deals are worth doing and at least hes not stringing you along by making you come to see him before he gives you the bad news.

I dont think this post makes much sence!

How does trading in an 8k car for an 18k car give them 10k cash ?? That would mean that they got the R32 for nothing!

Who says your 06 2.0FSI Passat is worth 8K? Trade values are around 4k !!

I dont think its Volkswagen who are not taking in their own cars as trade ins but more likely a dealer who knows that he doesnt want a car that will be difficult to sell on his forecourt. His R32 will be easier to shift than a petrol Passat with the old road tax to pay. The guy looking for a second hand Passat will not be looking for a 5 year old petrol car. Sell your car privately and then talk to Commons Road Cars.

I didn't say 10k profit, I said 10k cash. Instead of having the money tied up in stock.

Just about every other dealer I have asked, its a very high spec low mileage car. Regardless, I only used those figures to make the point. I was prepared to consider what ever price he had offered.

He could price have priced that into the deal. For the sake of the brand a VW main dealer should be at least required to give a quote if a returning customer come back to buy another VW.

True that, parts and service lads are top notch. Pauraig retired from sales there a few weeks ago, still coming into TMC to take care of customers who want to buy off P. Im in TMC btw lol

When I bought my mk5 a couple years back from them they weren't one bit nice about it and it was a straight up cash deal! Paraig is a sound man, knew him well in my last job and was in regularly to TMC when I had the vRS! Parts department is decent in Commons but doubt I'd buy there again!

My apologies bitching session was a bit strong....

But I know if I was told that I wasn't being so much as quoted on a trade in against a car I was interested I would have rang them first then started the thread once the dealer hadn't given a valid reason for refusing the trade
