Was checking the VRT out of interest, if you go to the Online VRT Calculator and pick a model it now lists the CO2 even for old cars like Corrado's and mk2 Golf's

Although I am not sure where they are getting their figures for the older ones though, but it could be a good sign in that its possible they are not all going to be lumped into the top band!

see they have some models in at 999g/km - I assume these will be hit with higher rate?

MK2 GTi is listed at 192g/km - luckily comes in under 200.

BMW E46 M3 - 323g/km !!!

No - I think it's just a case of they haven't got around to putting in the data yet. Either way the MkV GTI won't fall into the top VRT / emissions bracket.

Parkers Guide, VCAcarfueldata.org.uk (the English standard for emission based charges) and SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) all list the Mk5 GTI (DSG version) at 188 g/km thus putting it in band E (171 - 190 g/km) of the new system. This means that the VRT will drop from 30% at present to 28% while the road tax is up €10 from €590 to €600 per year.

Incidentally, the Sustainable Energy Ireland webapge (www.sei.ie) states the emissions of the same car as being 192 g/km hence putting it in Band F (much, more expensive)

Does anybody know for definite where revenue will source their actual emissions data from?

Finally, a good guide published by SIMI in relation to the new system can be found here: http://www.simi.ie/Files/SIMI_RoadTaxvrt.pdf

while emissions data for the various new models can be found here: http://www.simi.ie/Files/2008Co2Guide.pdf

Just took my own car as an example to see what rate it would come out at out of interest. The Co2 Emmissions on my UK logbook was 143 for what its worth. It seems there's 3 variants on the site for what is essentially the same car showing 3 different OMSV's and three different rate bands. Surly this ain't right or do you just pick whatevers cheapest for your car. There were always the 3 examples of the same car on the site but they always had the same OMSV and same rate of VRT. Maybe its just teething trouble but this seems a bit off the wall!!

Example 1

Guys whats the story here. Apparently I can apply for the VRT by post?? Is this right?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How and where do I Register?

A completed declaration form together with the vehicle should be presented at any of the 23 Vehicle Registration Offices (VRO) VRO Location Finder Opens in a new window (MS Word 51KB). Declaration forms are available on this website or from any VRO. All passenger (category A) vehicles must have approved documentation confirming the level of CO2 emissions of the vehicle being registered. The VRT will be calculated by the official at the VRO, following inspection of the vehicle. In the case of a used vehicle you must also present the foreign registration document and a document, as approved by the Revenue Commissioners confirming the levels of CO2 emissions of the vehicle at the time of manufacture. Without these registration documents (e.g. Sections 1-8 of the V5C from the UK) it is not possible for Revenue to register your vehicle. Please ensure you have the documents in your possession before you bring the vehicle into the State. If, due to some unforeseen circumstances, you do not have the documents in your possession when bringing the vehicle in you should make contact with your local VRO (see link above) by the next working day and explain the circumstances to them.

If the vehicle is new, VAT is also payable. (See Below)

A copy of the purchase invoice or other evidence of payment for the vehicle must be provided in all cases. You should be aware that inspection of vehicles being registered is a possibility and you should be prepared to make your vehicle available for any such inspection.

Postal applications for registrations of used vehicles may also be made at Vehicle Registration Offices. When making a postal application for registration the application should consist of:

* completed VRT 4 - Declaration for registration of a used vehicle (Other than a motor cycle) Opens in a new window (PDF 92KB) or VRT 5 - Declaration for Registration of a New or used Motor Cycle Opens in a new window (PDF 73KB)(as appropriate);
* a copy of the purchase invoice if available;
* the foreign Registration Book/Certificate or Export Certificate from the foreign licensing authority;
* a bank draft or personal cheque (see 5 below) for the amount of VRT due;
* Documentation (as approved by the Revenue Commissioners) confirming the level of CO2 emissions of the vehicle at the time of manufacture

Dealers can avail of ROS to register new vehicles.
