Vag 170 Pd Engine Fault

Hi all,

I'm just starting this thread to try and raise awareness from this side of the pond regarding the defective Siemans injector system fitted to the 170bhp 2.0 16V Tdi PD engines in various Volkswagens,Audi's,Skoda's and Seat's.
Just a brief explanation for anyone not affected. AFAIK the Siemans injectors were fitted to this engine (PD) to bring emissions in line with EU regulations. These injectors fail regularly and commonly and can be very dangerous. Once the injector goes down the a very brief warning -Engine Fault Workshop' appears on the dash and then the Ecu completely shuts down. From the time the problem is diagnosed you have about 2-3 seconds before you lose all power including no steering and no brakes. If you happened to be tipping along at 100 kph or overtaking this could have catastrophic results as you can imagine! The cost involved in this repair is huge. One new injector is E600 + VAT. Also when the injector goes down it dumps a load of diesal into the cylinder which in turn completely blocks the DPF. As a forced regeneration of the DPF is not reccommended by manufacturers the only fix is a new filter at E1000+.
However this is not about cost or trying to blag free injectors or DPF's. It's about raising awareness of this potentially fatal flaw on these cars which to this point VAG completely disregard and only put down to 'coincidence'. It's not good enough.
There's a campaign being started on virtually every VAG forum now so as to try and bring this to the attention of VAG and to show that this is not a 'coincidence'
I would really appreciate if anyone affected by this would post here with maybe a brief explanation of how it happened and any repair costs incurred.
Even if you're a VAG owner and you're not affected by this it would be interesting to hear you're comments?

This is just a link to my specific problem which happenend only this week..

I've had 2 go down between March and September of last year, got all four replaced second time round and been fine since. This business of coasting to a hault with no prior warning is the worst part (even worse than the mad repair bill) especially if you happened to be in the middle of an overtake!

Definately replacing all 4 and a dpf delete is the only job. I just think it's a disgrace to have to spend 2+ grand to leave a 2007 car a good car! And all because the manufacturers use faulty parts!
The situation I'm in is that I am just not in a position to spend that amount at this moment and so because of this I will probably be forced to sell the car. I can't afford either not to be able to drive anywhere not knowing whether the car will just stand up on the road. It's a shame because I really did love the car and the wife is gutted too

Ah well...looks like it'll be a bit of a downgrade for a while

Thats shockin'!

QUOTE (Dallan @ Apr 8 2011, 03:06 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Is there no alternative to using the siemens ones? is there not a modified one?
It's not something i've actually looked into tbh but i would seriously doubt it for the simple reason that this is such a common problem and has affected so many people and to date ive never heard of any other fix other than replacing like with like. There could well be something out there Dallan-i just wanted to raise the safety issue (or lack of it!) here and VAG's blatant disregard for customers safety and lack of acknowledgement of any issue at all.

May be worth looking into though

Would pd140 injectors with a bit of custom mapping fit?

I have 1 injector fail myself last year in October and it cost me all the repair 850 euro with a second hand injector from a member here Kevin (KevC). I was at the traffic lights when this happen so just causing some obstruction for other drivers. So far I clocked over 10 thousands km after repair and seem to be fine but now I am getting concern about this because I am driving abroad in a couple of weeks and I don’t want another injector to fail while I am over. The mileage now on my vrs is 183 thousands km.

Did you only replace 1 injector Irin? I'm in t same boat now-don know what to do to be honest? Do I chance it with failed injector replaced and dpf delete done, spend a fortune and replace all 4 injectors or just get rid of it before it puts me in an early grave!? (either through stress or goin across a hedge when it's shuts down from another failed injector!

Your concern about going abroad is definately a genuine one! It's hard to call. Theres no test you can carry out either to check this problem. I'd just make sure I had breakdown assist that covers abroad just to be safe!

My car was on the driveway for one week and like you I was looking at my options; either way has to be driveable in order to do something with it, sell it or keep it, so I call the recovery and the guy told me straight away about Kevin having a similar problem and other Volkswagen cars with this issues. I got only one injector and the garage replace the wiring loom and other gaskets. In my case I blame the fuel filter (not fitted properly) and the dirty diesel and on that base with a new filter and injector cleaners added regularly I drive now the car. I was thinking to sell/trade it after repair but for what I get for it rather replace all injectors if I have to do this, beside I like this car... well after hearing about all this problems I want the common rail engine in.

i have 06 passat 2.0 tdi sport, injector no 3 went in January on my wife on her way to work at 5.30am, car just stopped dead on the road, cost me E920 to fix and last Saturday no 4 went, so another E900 again. got onto VW ireland and they denied there's a problem, when the guy on the phone said this to me and i lost the plot with him, told him never a vw in the driveway again and i would make sure as many people knew about it as possible, told him check the sites (uk passats have loads of them) but he did'nt care saying there cars are still reliable, and i asked if they are so reliable how come this is happening, and why they only offer 2 yrs warranty when alot of other manufacturers are offering double, and some 7 yrs. I am currently in the process of getting in contact with VW in Germany to let them know that im not a bit happy about it and dont plan on giving up on telling people about there shite respect for there car owners.

Here's Briskoda.net's take on the situation.
Injector problems.
I've the CR tdi version and it's had its fair share of problems. ABS pump failure and DPF issues. Very lucky financially to get abs problem sorted outside warranty, but this situation is a disgraceful disregard for customers and customer safety. obviously because we are ordinary Joes, we can do nothing about it.
