I am also 28 Brian. I have no sympathy for you, the days of tradesmen with no papers is and was long gone even before I left school in 98.

You're a bigger fool to try your hand at three different trades in ten years and come out of it with no papers!

In todays play it safe, health and safety mad world, no employer in their right mind would take on someone with out the relevant qualifications needed for a specific job!

When did I say I had the hardest job in the world? you're the one claiming to have worked for 10 years without 1 handy day, some man for one man!

You speak of accomplishments, I'm sure you've heard the term " jack of all trades and master of none ", in most employers minds that is all you will ever be without papers to back up these "accomplishments".

I am grateful for my job, that doesnt mean I should work for pittens though!

I do however admire anyone who has the balls who goes out and works for themselves, I may not have went out on my own but I have done work for plenty of people and I do know what its like!

A fool! Thanks! The most well off and skilled men I know have no papers, Im not saying thats the way forward, but to be honest, in the right job It comes down to hands on experience. Im not talking about people in trades either, I know of at least 15 millionaires with 0 qualifications, these arent old guys either, they started at the bottom and worked there way up.
And as for the jack of all trades, that to me translates to master of none, this isent true I assure you.

Those last comments would have angered me and i know neither of ye .
Ah wheres the point, 99% of my friends who have qualifications coming out there holes are now sitting at home doing nothing, its the ingenious ones that are going to succeed in the coming years.

better a trades man with no papers, than a tosser that slleps in the barracks, gets money for allegdly going deaf, gets loads of bonus payments ie housing, and basically gets paid to go to chad, the leb etc to get a sun tan, and look "cool" on the news walking around with sun glasses on, keeping peace in that country. basically the irish army = bunch of lazy, obsease, good for nothings milking the state on handy money, the only action they see is when escorting post vans on a thursaday morning, standing arond towns with there guns! rant over

I agree you cant beat hands on experience, I used to work 6 days and 5 night of the week when I was an apprentice and it definitley shows.

Good luck on the quest to be a millionnaire with no papers, you'll need it, because thats all those lads are, lucky!

Do yourself a favour Brian and go back to college, then you wont have to "assure" me as to the skill level of your chosen trade because you'll have the papers to prove it!

I dont feel the need to ''assure'' anyone! If I wanted to work in a ''nice'' job on regular money like yourself I would have gone to college when I left school and take notes on how to handle theoretic situations in my future career, sadly for me, this doesent float my boat at all but its seems to for you which is ok.

Thanks for the well wishes by the way, your too kind.

As for getting qualified in what I intend doing, Ide probably have to do 10yrs in college to cover all aspects. 10yrs later Id have paper to prove that I went to all the lectures and passed the exams. Its only now I really know what I want to do also so that would make me 38 when done, thats too long away Im afraid, theres money to be made between now and then, time is running out.

The information is there, not everyone needs to go to college though in order to find it.

Papers mean jack these days, college degrees mean jack it's all about hands on experience and the end result of what ever job your doing.. Though you need a degree of some sort for many public sector jobs it don't mean the person is up to the job just because they sat through lectures..

i agree with this 100%.

So do I. I know so many lads that are qualified in engineering etc.....they know all about the stress factors, yield strengths, forces, etc, but when it comes to putting it all together and say designing a gearbox or something taking ALL the factors into account the non experienced lads dont know jack shit.

The best of luck Brian but I don't think that you're going to need it in the long run. You have a can do and get off your hole attitude to an extent that very few people could understand let alone have them.

Like you said, most wealthy people have 0 qualifications.

As for the public sector, many seem to have the attitude of well everyone else made money in the boom years so they can now go fuck themselves. I don't want to take a pay cut.
There is not enough money to keep paying them so something has to give.

Well I dont sleep in a barracks Peteand if I did I'd have to pay to do so.

Cant comment on the army deafness claims because it was before my time.

Let me know about these bonus housing payments wll ya? I hope to buy a house next year and they should come in handy!

Yes, the army gets paid to go overseas, they get their normal wage and they get a UN allowance, would you prefer if they went for free?

Its terrible that they wear sunglasses in central Africa alright, what are they thinking. I'm glad you think they look cool though!

What kind of action do you expect them to see?
What about 2 the explosive devices made safe by the Army bomb disposal teams this week and the other 2 on the 11th of last month, will we get them to call you the next time?

Or what about the Naval Service Divers who assist in the search and recovery operations for bodies when someone goes missing? Sure give us your mobile number there Pete and we'll pass it on!

I'm not bitching at all bud, simply trying to defend my corner, what about all the moaning about the public sector?

I am on a day off actually, not that I should have to justify myself to you!

Buttering up Brian, I'm not the shithot cabinet maker/mechanic/welder posing as an engineer!

I served my time on VW, AUDI, MAZDA and MERECEDES and I am now training to be an Engine Room Artificer and will be qualified next year.

And your exact job title?

The bottom line is the public sector got what they wanted because the government were chickens, this will have the effect of lengthening the recession and general shittyness of the whole situation and it was also an easy way out for the current government in that they dident have to deal with it, but instead pass the problem onto the next government who will have to deal with it.
Either way it will have to be deal with at some stage.
