Transporter T4 Question

The fuel gauge in my 1997 Transporter isn't functioning properly, the needle keeps jumping up and down all the time.

Is this a problem that affects a lot of VW's from this era, as I used to have a Vento which did the same?

Is there anything I can do to fix it?

I've a 98 and it does have a life of its own at times but not really jumping up and down.

If your handy with a soldering iron you could try this seams to be a common problem with the older clocks,
