Handling is very well balanced, you can push them as hard if not harder than a 106 Gti, In terms of speed Shane they are level with my mk4 in 1st and 2nd gear. Great car to drive, id buy one.

No idea about reliabilty and running problems etc.

I would suggest taking a look on octane.ie Shane, there are plenty of 172's over there and loads of posts.

From what I have read, they are fairly quick (not van quick)

Amazing handling, and an unburstable 2 litre engine.

I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Send Plane a PM, he has a track 172 and it's very quick.

Neil.

I had one, a 01 ph1 which is the one you want unless its a facelift 172 cup

I'd have another one if it wasn't for the number of cars here already

looked into gettin one of these for ages before i picked up the gti. i'd say i'll still get one at some stage in the comin years. i love them and think the facelifted ones look the bees knees. there one for sale on edition 38 at the mo aswell with some mad orange wheels. (which obviously would appeal to me

mate in waterford had one and he raves about it. absouletly loved it. iirc from lookin they have a couple of common probs that are easy to spot so if one you look at is free from these and well maintained your onto a winner.

do it i say.

nice car all in all nice interior beast of an engine decent handling only thing clio doesnt have going for them though which may have been improved is the turning circle on them... vw may make a tight u turn where as depending on the turn the clio would need a 3 pointer. mate of mine had a lend of one for a few weeks while his car was off the road and he does nothing but talk about it being the best car hes drove... he hasnt driven a vw yet though

I think a friend of Ronan's had one of them and it broke his heart trying to keep it on the road.

Typical French car really, nice to drive when everything is ok with them but God help you (and your mechanic) when it starts to go wrong. I wouldn't buy one because I don't like working on Renaults, I'd happily give Paul's a good rip around Mondello though

Any more info on this chet? it would be 00,01 that would be getting looked at,whats the diffrences ie ph1?

The ph1 and ph2 are almost completely different to drive. The ph1 feels like a proper little hot hatch where the ph2 just feels like a hatchback with a big engine in it. The ph1 is also better looking in that it looks different to a base model

Oh, you might hear mention of a shift light on them, it seems lucky dip whether the cars got them

If you're offered a 01 with 1313 in the reg don't buy it!

I had a lot of trouble from a williams clio before it just kept breaking engine mounts no matter what we did
The car was straight never crashed when I went investigating the clio shares the same mounts for the 1.2 as the 2.0 williams
I got onto Williams UK about this after breaking 2 full sets of mounts in 3 days and I was told its a problem with them thats going back a few years ago now
