i cant for the life of me understand why your changing all the wiring, are you saying they cut all the sub looms???? surely you would only have to change the few that were butchered?

QUOTE (GTiDub @ Feb 3 2009, 05:16 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>This is the first time i've done a Golf electrical-wise.

Used to disassemble and reassemble my Nova years back and never had issues with it, but then again, this is another more advanced system, so i guess i'm winging it to an extent.
However, I've a few people at hand to give a hand with vagcom use etc and i've bought the ELSA software workshop manual so it's going to assist with the rebuild.

the thing about it is that the loom is suited for my engine, so it is, in effect (ideally speaking) just a matter of plug and play

however, i'd be rather short sighted if I did not envision some sort of issues arising at some stage and the first one is to take out the subloom (number 4) from my current banjaxed loom for the electric sunroof and "marry it" to the new donar loom (which did not have a sunroof)

So it's going to be a methodical process but i will get there.

@ Neilo: I've disassembled and reassembled the Golf so many times in preparation of this (as it's been a long term goal to replace the loom due to its damage) that it's second nature knowing where things are meant to go

Are you cutting your new loom to splice in for the sunroof ? Would it not have been easier just to repair the originally damaged part . Im sorry but it sounds like a completely unnecessary waste of time to me . Each to their own i suppose .

i had ta put a wiring loom in a renaultr traffic there last summer below in work. when ya do get it in will more than likely get lights on the dash and she might even go right. i think your better of gettin these things done professionaly. cause we got the exact same loom for the traffic and when we plummed it in perfect and changed a few sensors it wouldn't go right and we got it plugged into a machine have the loom was wrong and had ta get it done professionly

But all i know is that back then the car died on the M50 and that the central wiring had to be sliced and diced by a garage to get it going again (lights and ignition were seperated or something like that) when i had asked them how did they get it going again, they replied....."don't ask" lol!

No offence, but I would be asking exactly what they did to your car.

Part of my brain says; fair play to you for having a go, and all that... the other part of my brain questions your sanity for 'playing about' with the wiring of such a high end car... ...best of luck, in any case!!!

As you probibly now yourself , swapping the wiring is not the hardest thing to do , its just lining up all the dash, plastics and panels

If you stuck on something , feel free to give me a buzz, I love a challange

Keep up the good work

QUOTE (GTiDub @ Feb 4 2009, 08:49 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>i would have preferred it had it been that easy.

but as it was over 2 yrs ago whatever was done is history. I've tried to locate things that were spliced and diced, but it's too much of a headache right now. When i get the current loom out of the car, then i'll have a better look at seeing what wires are meant to go where. All i remember was hearing that a section of the light loom was damaged due to a melting of wires somewhere with the central electrics and a section was cut out and a bandaid job was done to get the car up and running (which at the time was all i was worried about; getting my transport going again for work), and that a relay board section or soemthing was damaged and even though that was replaced, the splice and dice was required, according to the garage (whom i must admit did wonders getting the car going again, so i've never had an issue with them over it

As for the subloom Number 4 (for sunroof wiring) i've checked the new loom and the empty slots for the pin connectors are there for the addition of a sunroof loom, so it's just a case of careful manipulation and extraction of the subloom from the old and insertion to the new loom.

I got the chassis number from the donar car and was able to compare and contrast it against the chassis number of my own car (for the AUM engine code) before purchasing it (and it was a good price too of ÂŁ245) and the only thing different was the lack of electric sunroof loom in the new donar replacement loom.

However, I've been methodically going through each wire and further contrasting them against the old, and happily enough (so far at least) all connectors etc are identical in wire configuration etc to my old loom.

As for the patience part of it, look at it as a cheaper form of retail therapy and "after-work de-stress time" and as for the time frame on this, well ideally i'd like to have the car back on the road asap, but that is the impatient part of me which would like to get things done faster; but due to the extent of the rewiring jobbie, I'm happy to plod on with it without any firm end-point in view......

As for it working or not after all that; well that's something I'm concious off, and something to note and look forward to in the near future. And, if it doesn't go, well then, I'll just have to tackle and approach it from another angle of thought. Honestly, this little operation does not faze me in the least. It's all in the spirt of adventure, as any true enthuasiast would agree on

I have done a few full wiring loom removal and refittings on vag's and bmw's and even a few mercedes its not as bad as people think,
Ok you need to have patience to do it right and have it looking OEM
Atleast you got a loom for the same car
It becomes a lot more fun when you have to start cutting and splicing/making up a loom to suit and its not for the faint hearted
