Hi lads,

This is my hoodride project, a 1982 VW golf.

Image

She was pretty rat already when I rescued it from some corkonian farmer's hands and 3 years of skate trips around Ireland didn't do her any good.
Some financial problems made me stop it for 4 years, I just got back on my feet and I decided to give her a second (3rd or maybe 4th) chance.

So far, battery cables have been replaced, main connections changed, new battery, scrapyard starter.
Car still refuses to boot up, starter moved for a while, then smoke came out off a battery cable and it died.
After changing the smokey cable the solenoid gets electricity but the starter refuses to crank.
I banged it a bit but no luck.

I bought a multimeter and I'm getting ready for the 2nd round.

Another mk1 for the cork area!! I hand a problem wit my golf refusing to start. Bought new fuse units, relays etc an it turned out all it was was a faulty ignition switch. Just take off the Steerin column surround an cross the connections off the back of the switch an see wat happens. I cud be totally wrong but dats why mine Wudnt start. Best of luck!

Thanks Veedub for the tip, I will start with the relays. I will check the ignition switch as well.
When you say fuse unit, you mean the one in the engine bay or the fuse box itself ?
Sorry mang, I'm a self-taught mechanic and I'm still far from becoming one...

The solenoid makes a noise every time I turn the key but starter refuses to work, even if it did it for a short while...
My car is badly rusted, it could be any connection...
I will be in Cork at the end of this month, updates coming soon.

Bad news so far...

I spent 4 days doing botch jobs to pass the nct and I finally decided to call a mechanic to boot it up, change the exhaust, adjust the handbrake and the clutch.

After 10 days, he told me he would fix it if I bring it to his garage.
I would have done it if he had told me that when I was in Cork...

I'm thinking about calling another mechanic from Cork who I know.

Anyone knows a brave corkonian mechanic who would bother driving to Rathcormac to boot up a car and have a look at it so they can give me a rough estimate ?

if the solenoid is clicking then power is getting to the starter, get a bar or hammer and give it a few belts,
this usually works better if you have one person turning the key and another tapping the starter.
rathcormac isnt to far from me if you want i can come up and give ya a few pointers.

Big Props to 83mars for showing up and bringing my diamond in the rough alive !!!
The starter was dirty (noob...), some wirebrush got it working.

( I forgot my camera )

My best shopping ever, recommended by 83mars : fuel primer , It bled the pump and unblocked the tank

This is not old oil, this is the crap that came out from the tank...

I have a small leak here, any one has a spare one ?

The car is insured and I will try to pass the nct on the first week of july, fingers crossed...

Well guys, now that the car started, here is my summer project : THE RAT RACE

I would like to fix and drive the golf as cheaply as possible from Cork to Alicante (Spain) passing by England.

Just a nice rat trip.

Cork-Alicante 3000 km

Passing the NCT is going to be a pain...
I'm trying to have everything ready for the 15 August.

More updates soon.

QUOTE (trevorbrady @ Jul 17 2013, 12:27 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>don't bother with the NCT if you're not going to be driving it in Ireland?

Haha.... I seriously thought about it...
I was actually thinking about it yesterday again... but I have been told police could stop my car and keep it...
I don't want to have my golf taken by some brits...
They took my beaches, my pubs, my hotels...but they will not take my golf!!!
hahaha

Does anyone know what's the craic with driving a foreign car in UK without nct ?

hey prospe!! this sounds like a real road trip adventure you have planned...

I wonder can you just get away with having an NCT booked for some future date; well after aug 15th?

You cant get away with driving a car with no test in UK, if you book an Mot (uk NCT equivalent) at a station for that day - all legal and above board.

Is the golf returning to Ireland, or are yon 'relocating' it to Spain??

Story bai!
long time no see, hope everything is ok or on its way !
I have been dreaming about that trip for a while... it was supposed to be a skate trip but my business went bankrupt and I couldn't find any reliable skater or cameraman for the trip.
I will try to get the nct, I don't want to be worried the whole trip.
I haven't decided yet what I'm doing with the car...I don't know if it will make it...
So far, I will drive it till spanish police/nct stops me, after that I was thinking about taking it apart...
I feel a bit bad for robbing the country of a mk1.
If the car stays in spain I will probably send back the plate and the chassis number.

Car at the moment :
Image

Handbrake got adjusted
Clutch firewall crack sorted
Gear linkage bushings replaced
Front right light replaced
Alloys and new tyres
Right door handle and lock fixed
And a lot of sanding and painting

Rear arches wirebrushed and chipcoated
The rear towing hook was too rusty and it got removed to avoid problems with the nct
Image

Ram air with a laying bit of a hoover pipe
Image

Oil flushed, refilled with heavy duty oil stabilizer
Image

A bit of cleaning
Image

Dash lights and radio done, checking the fusebox, no signs of rust
Image

Thanks again to Mars83 for the clutch firewall plate
Image

The car went for the nct and despite it failed the result was rather positive, no rust fail! :
(The car stalled three times on the way to the nct, tank is still dirty... nothing a flat screwdriver and some pipe can't fix on the side of the road)

The nct shopping list :

Front right Beam aim
wipers not working
Fuel cap seal faulty (fixed)
Left indicator blinking too fast
Speedometer no lights (fixed)
Front suspension ball joints
Exhaust leaking (the patch blew off on the way to the nct... At least I know the car can still do 120 km/h)
CV boots and steering linkage gaiter
Flexible brake pipe

I tried a third mechanic in Fermoy before the nct for wheels alignment, wipers, beams, left indicator etc...after two hours wandering around Fermoy the guy didn't do anything at all...
He gave me a couple of advices, told me the car wouldn't pass because of the rust and didn't charge me, he was been nice....

Any reliable mechanic in Cork area ?
The mechanics I visited seem not to take my accent and my rusted car seriously...hehe.

i would like to fix the nct stuff and change the clutch

hows tricks jose??
good to see its moving along,
if you need a hand leme know, im still up the walls at the moment but ill try spare an evening to get your baby back on the road.
theres not a whole pile there to be honest, could get that done in a evening if all goes well.
might be worth taking off the fuel pipe and pore petrol into the tank, might clear the heavy stuff out.

best of luck.

Hi lads,

Good news
Image

I got the nct two weeks ago!!
This last month has been hectic, I will put a few pics of the rust machine asap.

The car didn't have brakes the day of the NCT, the mechanic didn't have the flexipipes yet.
I ended up fitting some opel corsa 97 calipers, same discs, same master cylinder, new flexipipes and new pads.
I got 30 min late to the nct but the guys took my car anyway.(Blarney nct)

The set up passed and works pretty good.

Thanks to Rathcormac mechanic, ended up doing a nice job at a nice price.

I did some DIY editing as well, enjoy :
