FMIC = Front Mount InterCooler
The intercooler on the 150's is front mounted not side mounted like the 130's.

I would definatley go for the PD 130, i have seen a few PD 150's giving trouble and believe it or not snapping camshafts.
I had a PD 130 got it remapped by Joe up in Chipped IRl and it was amazing, imported her from UK, she was badged GT-TDI with recaros etc.. bloody great car and getting over 60mpg, couldnt fault it at all.

Thanks Quattro, do u think that they are giving trouble because the engine is tweeked too much at that end??

I have heard of the camshaft issue with the PD150s alright but I don't think it's that common with them either.

If I were you Mark I'd keep an open mind and buy on price vs condition. i.e. if you find a car in very good condition at a very good price then buy it whether it happens to be a 130 or a 150.

ive heard of a few 150pd engines having head trouble, supposed to be a known fault but not very common.

id go for the 130 and map it, crazy amount of torque!

I would say keep an open mind like george,if you set your sights on one engine you might end up missing a cracker. The UK is over run with GT TDIs so its a case of buyer beware as to what you are really getting.

I have owned both the 130 and 150. The 150 gave a wee bit of bother, 2 gearboxes, but it is the same gearbox as the 130 and it had a habit of blowing hoses off the intercooler, but it was a much better car than the 130, if I were in your position I would be looking for a 150.

Out of the box the 150 definately go for, but if you were going for the mods i have done won't make a difference as the engine is the same. A 130 will remapp to on average 170bhp and a 150 will go to 190ish bhp.

It's interesting to see that the cams seem to fail more on a 150 than any other PD engine as they all share the same head, camshaft and valves etc. All are the same part numbers. The PD150 with more horsepower probably tends to get revved more, possibly making it more prone to the problem. However i think 90% of failures are due to wrong oil. I know of at least 2 dealers who have used wrong oil in the past.

My car has had high horsepower from new and i have always changed my oil out of the box. I have a few miles on my car and i took the cam cover off to inspect mine and i have no wear on my cams whatsoever.

Had a 150 myself, sold it with 71k on the clock.
Problems I had go wrong, FLY Wheel went, (supposed to be common problem), also replace the clutch. All under the warranty thank god.
Other than that to me it was a cracking car, to me the engine was lovely and quite compared to some 5 speed 130 brake Passats.
Again MPG was unreal usually about 53Mpg. my vRS TDi is getting approx 44.6. currently only 12k on t so it may lossen out a bit more later.
I remember when i bought the PD150, there were like gold dust with only 5 at the time of looking but of course when i was selling the garages gave me the usual rubbish that ohh the engine is to powerful and won't suit many people. Of couse they said then i would get a better price for the 130. you're goused either way with the garages.

but anyway both should be a cracking car for you. as in the other post above there is now loads of them, too many imports too though so look out if i was buying one again i would really be doubling checking everything. Make sure you buy the 03/04 model if possible as these came with a lot of VW fitted extras. Alarm, CD , extra head rest.
Bottom line for me Go for the PD150, usually pushing out approx 160+ as apposed to advertised 150 depending on what roling roads you believe. ;-)
