Pb Coolant Flange

My GTI is leaking coolant from the flange at the front of the engine. Not seriously, but enough to be a worry and to need a top up every few days to be on the safe side.

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to get these on tight and with no leaks, as this will be the second time that I've replaced it.

The last time I made sure the block was clean and used some blue sealant, but maybe did not wait long enough before driving the car - and I can't find any torque values for the two securing bolts, so not sure if they were tight enough.

Many thanks if you can help.

Oh, and some F****r decided to rub his skip lorry up my passenger side the other day as well - broke the mirror, dented the door and fron wing and the wheel arch. So it looks as if I may as well go for a respray sooner rather than later - waiting to hear on the insurance. If anyone knows of any decent 3 door late MkII doors going, give me a shout please.

The coolant flange at the front of the block/head between the spark plugs on the PB engine is only a plastic flange, the most torque on those nuts should be about 10-15lbs, the best sealing compound to use is made by renault and they use it as a complete gasket on the sumps, it has never failed me yet.
Those flanges have a metal insert where the nut goes to tighten it to the head, i have fitted a lot of these flanges to the PB engine and also the flange at the side of the head over the gearbox goes also, better to replace them both to be honest i done it to mine and havent looked back!
Always make sure the surface of the head where these flanges go onto are cleanof any old gaskets or dirt etc.., give them a rub of 180 grit sand paper and a final clean of thinners and bobs ur uncle

Probably best to leave it overnight if you are using some sort of gasket sealer with it. I presume you are replacing the black rubber O ring with it also?? and it is sitting in properly.
I have found Loctite Ultra Grey to be great for sealing things like that but think they may have stopped doing it as I cant find it anywhere anymore.
