Passat Window Regulator

Has anybody changed a window regulator on a passat, or on any vw, because I assume they're all similar. I was told that the door lock has to come out and most of the door stripped! Anybody have any idea?

Not on a VAG car, but newer cars are getting to be a nightmare for jobs like this. The over complexity of trim on new cars, borders on stupidity, and clips are getting smaller and easier to break, while at the same time, more brute force to remove them. It is possible to do it at home. but make sure you have enough time and patience.

Pig of a job. Might be worth your while just paying someone to do it if you dont have patience.

did you buy one of these? if so, what did you pay? i was quoted €112 + vat from a main dealer. motor factors don't stock them.

need one for the passenger window, but refuse to pay so much for a tiny piece of plastic and besides, i don't sit in the passenger seat.

Yeah my Da paid that price. Its was the drivers door so he needed it. And its more then just a piece of plastic.
had this problem myself, the bit that breaks is a plastic bit that cant handle the weight of the glass. I got a repair kit from belfast for £12 which replaces the plastic bit with a metal bit. VW ireland dont sell this only the whole unit which still has the plastic bits which will break again
Thanks for your quick replies, afaik the window is moved by a cable, and it sounded like the cable was frayed the day before it went. I just assumed the cable broke? The part is €102+vat from blackwater motors.
Got the window sorted. Gave it to a local mechanic. When I called up the first thing he said was, "nice car, are those the Audi RS6 wheels". Then after spotting his mint white mk2 gti with a chip & cam, I reckoned The car was safe enough!!

He had to remover the speakers, door locks, handle ect. The unit I got is pretty much most of the inside of the door. All that just for a broken cable! Only cost €60 and must have taken him 2 hours to do!

All the plastic clips mentioned above were intact on the old unit. Is it worth taking them off the cable in case they go in future? Otherwise I'll just dump the lot.
