Seeing as i've no VAG project i figured i may aswell stick this up here. i get the feeling you lot haven't been following it on my site
Image

I've been looking for something to use as a commuter for college come september. I was looking at Saxo VTR's and had put the cabby up for sale to raise some money. This 5 practically landed at my doorstep so i just couldn't say no especially and a price that meant the cabby doesn't need to go.

Its taxed but not tested so thats booked in for June 5th.

Barely ran in

Image

The passanger A pillar has had a repair at some stage which isn't suprising. Not the best of jobs but i'm not too bothered

Image

The drivers side is original but showing some signs of rust

Image

As is the drivers rear quarter. Theres some rust on the inside of the window too i need to probe further

Image

The car drives well and doesn't appear to need anything. The indicator stalk was flapping about around the column so i put 2 new bolts in to sort it.

Plans for the future are a carb'd 1.4 energy transplant. Possibly with a 1.6 bottom end if i come across one

Nothing major happening. Fixing a few bits as i go.

Heres where i put in the new bolts to hold the indicator stalk in.

Image

The wipers weren't returning to the park position when turned off which was just a fuse as i was told on here.

I noticed a bit of play in the steering column, the steering wheel would move in and out about half an inch if you pulled on it. Not good i thought.

Turns out it was just a slightly loose bolt at the knuckle down by the pedals. It was only a matter of pulling out one of the heater ducts and getting a ratchet on it. Happy at that!

And just to get you that little bit more excited

Spot the haynes that was donated to me!

Good weather and nothing to do so a young chaps mind turns to corrosion assessment.

I decided to have a look at the rear quarter where the worst of the rust is. It didn't look too bad until i had a good look inside

Image

Image

I popped out the rear window and stripped out the rear trim panel to have a good look

Some pics looking up from inside the car

And then the point of no return, the screwdriver came out

So out with the wire wheel and brush. The lots probably going to need chopping out. We'll see what happens over the weekend.

Some pics after a bit with the wire wheel

Yesterday i picked up this lot. Full gt turbo kit (less the bumpers which i have) Also there are clear front indicators and an aftermarket R19 style grille.

Image

I've to go back in the next couple of days to pull off the rest of bits i want. Seats, steering wheel front struts/brakes and rear shocks and probably a load of other stuff while i'm there.

Today i was at the A pillars. I've just realised i never took any pics of them after i had stripped back the paint etc  Anyway heres the drivers side one after a quick coat of primer. Not 100% below the curve line but its covered by the wing so not an issue.

Image

The passanger side had been repaired before, some metal had been braised on and some filler slapped on. Some working with a file and some filler and it now looks like this. Not perfect but a vast improvement on the way it was!

As i mentioned earlier i had acquired new front and rear bumpers. Rather than waste these as they're fairly rare i've done a deal with the rear one for 2 smoothened and meshed bumpers

Pics of the new bumper

And the 2 bumpers that i'm getting to go on

Slightly chavvy but i like them so suck it

I picked up some more bits today. Front and rear seats, steering wheel, gear gaitor and 2 sunvisors as mine are broken

Seats need a good clean and could do with some replacement bolsters. More pics when they're cleaned up

Image

I have a full stainless scorpion exhaust from it too. It looks like it migth bolt straight on with the c-type lump in there but i'm not sure how loud it would be (very, i think) Note the sparkplug!

Image

The front subframe is out of the car but i haven't got it home yet so no pics. On one side of the car there was 16v brakes. Turns out the discs and carriers where from my original blue 19 (the one with the black wheels) I sold them to a mate who had a clio 1.4, he sold the clio to a friend of his who sold the clio without the brakes and sold them to his brother who had the 5 turbo

Subframe kindly delivered this evening! Haven't had a look to see if the campus has an ARB or if the subframe will take one yet

Image

The quarter window section on the gt i got the bits from was perfect so i attacked it with a grinder
Image
Should come in useful when sorting out mine. Not sure how yet tho...

Image

The standard rear bumper also arrived. This is near enough the last of the bits i'm getting. I just need to get the rear boot panel and the trim over one of the rear lights. they're painted on the gt so already smoothed (y)

I stripped the hubs down yesterday and popped down to the garage today with some nearly acquired bearings. One of the originals was shot but one seemed ok. Seemed silly not to replace the two of them when they were out. While they were apart i gave them a bit of a clean up with the wire brush (y)

Image

The strut top mounts seemed fine apart from being a bit grubby. The bearings are nice and smooth so i just gave them a clean up and a coat of black BBQ paint. The calipers and rear drums will be getting a coat of the same as soon as i tidy them up (y)

Image

Some new goodies arrived today, wishbones, balljoints and track-rod ends. 5 bits are super cheap

To fit the GT kit the campus side mouldings need to be removed. The GT has no rub strips as standard so this leaves a nice mess of fittings/holes along the quarter panel, door and wing. So these will need sorting and painting. First up we have these little nail head type things that the moulding clips slot onto.

Image

Is was thinking i would have to grind them off but i chanced my arm at breaking them off by getting a vice grip on and twisting. About half (24 in total i think) came off flush but the rest will need further attention before a quick skim of filler.

Heres one of the better ones. Its impossible to get a good picture of them really

Image

Along with the 25 nail head things theres 4 holes and 2 two of these white fittings in each door. The white things just pull straight out.

Image

I need to get the doors ready for filling so that meant pulling off the door cards. I forgot about that black sticky crap renault uses  I was sure the door card was going to snap!

And that right there kids is why you don't buy a Renault
Image

Since when do you have a Corrado Chet?

#13 ·
The rust is fair bad alright, i'll give you that!

The corrado belongs to one of the brothers. Despite my best efforts 2 of them have VW's

dare I say it but I liked these when I was younger, the Renault 5 Turbo.........used see one around, looked like a little pocket rocket motor

keep up the good work

#16 ·
They usually rust at the A pillars first. Then the window. GT's obviously rot behind the skirts etc so are much worse. Must are UK imports too so that doesn't help. I'll post up some pics of the lancia in a sec

Great thread Chet. I only saw an R5 Turbo the other day, haven't seen one in years.

Tye first car I had when I was 17 was a brand new R5 Campus, 96 LS 2 96 .....it's still on the road!

Good luck with your project

#19 ·
A few turbos around alright. I'm not really going for a replice look with mine, i'll be painting the turbo kit black instead of body coloured.

Picking up my alloys tomorrow, 13"

The engine thats in it is a 60bhp c-type early push rod engine (turbo engine minus the turbo) In the corner of the workshop i have a 1.4 8v OHC e-type "energy" engine which originally called my general lee home. Its one of the early twin choke weber carb'd ones which makes 80bhp along with being more fuel efficient (this being my commuter...) If i can find an early (97-99) megane 1.6 going cheap i can remove the injection and immob and fit the 1.4 carb. That would give 90-95bhp which would be a 50% improvement over standard

On the other hand i will have a 1.8 16v 137bhp engine going spare soon
Image
That does involve alot more work and not ideal as a commuter!
