Never took a pic of it in primer but here's one in the spray booth, thins was my original colour so i stuck wit it.
Image

So back to garage and the work began again
Image

Had this rats nest to sort out
Image

This is the baby i put in it, its a 2000cc 8 valve pinto, with cosworth pistons and rods and very heavily ported head and is running on twin 45 webbers on Lumenition ignition system.
Image

Image

New exhaust manifold, had to move engine over to the left about 40mm in order to clear the steering arm.
Image

Image

Image

Got some carbon fiber arch protectors to stop stone chips on the rear arches
Image

And nearly finished product.

QUOTE (Mike Feeney @ Apr 14 2009, 06:43 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Lovely, Nice Reg too
Image

plenty of grunt in her
Aye reg is something il be holding on to, although i have been offered enough to bite my fist and have to decline.
Haven't had it on the rollers yet but id be hoping for the 160 mark and plenty of torque.

QUOTE (Alan B. @ Apr 14 2009, 09:52 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>anyone else apritiate how well the engine looks in the bay?
almost perfectly placed in the centre with the manifold sticking out one side and the carbs out the other....

where'd you get the arches? did you make them or buy them?
they look the buisness
I know what your saying, its nice to look into a simple engine bay and see everything and not a heap of plastic looking at you,

Arches are std group4 tarmac Monte carlo alloy arches, you can buy them from any good motorsport supplier and they are just pop riveted on for simplicity and strength.

QUOTE (p-graal @ Apr 14 2009, 10:08 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>a good build with a good auld reliable engine savage work. was lookin at lads mk2 there last week doin the same built but runnin a 1600 16v toyota on throttle bodies some work in them .
what events are plannin on competin in for the year
Aye the pinto is as simple as you can get without going into as much expense as the 16v boys, them 4age engines are some job 200+bhp out of a 1600 is just wild.
Just planing on keeping it simple this year, just doing rallysprints and maybe a hill climb or 2, as been unemployed is a bit of a balls

Just going back to your reg - what model was it originally Enda ? Was it a mexico or pure coincidence?
Looking at your shell and inner arches, RSs had support panel on top of inner wing at strut (or at least mine had) but the non RSs didn't afaik. Real week point especially if harder suspensions in place. I need to drive one again soon.

Keep an eye out for 175 DZA up your neck of the woods. It was red but who knows what colour it is now. It was a very clean shell when the lads bought it from me for rallying. I'd love to know what happened to it and it's engine. Still searching for OYI 461 RS MK2 aswell.

Thats fantastic Enda, I think everyone can appreciate a proper mk1/2 Escort. Gorgeous. Great work gone into it too, Iv been sideways on Tynagh track plenty of times but never in a Mk2!
Image

All the lads I go to the rallys with have mk1/2's, they're a bit older than me so they can afford it! One of them had the cover of Classic Ford about 9 months ago, you might have seen it...

Aw mine was once a humble 1300 popular, just pure coincidence came with the car when i bought it back in 2004. Yup your right, non rs had a smaller hole for the top mount to fit in, rs's had a larger allowing for a better top mount, mine was just re-skinned with a rs top plate, im running 2'1/4" group4 coilovers and roller bearing alloy top mounts, aw god if you drive one again, thats it the horn will be on for another
Image

Im not that good at remembering reg no's but would you know any names that it could have gone to, if it ended up around sligo i might know where it is.

Don't worry i cant afford this craic either i just try and buy the right bits and not skimp on quality, im only 24 myself but most of my money has been ploughed into rallying, drove my first mk2 at the age of 19 in 2004 at rally school ireland 3 weeks later i cleared my savings from my acc account and bought this car, and iv since been upgrading and changing parts since. I haven't bought classic ford in ages for fear id see something id like and buy it
Image

Who's car was it i might have seen it just can't think at the moment .

Trevor Lawlor's, full rally spec Mk2 for the road, Its white with red RS decals.
You're right not to buy the magazines, they're right bastards for sticking expensive ideas in your head

Jeez no idea of names Enda, it was about 10 years ago

Did the gearbox fit into the popular ok or did you have to modify the tunnel. From what I remember the OHV Kent cars couldn't take the OHC Pinto unless car was an autobox originally which some 1600s were and so their tunnel gave greater clearance.

Aside from larger hole for the top mount there was a second plate fitted on top of the inner wing on mine and I think all RSs (possibly Mexicos too) just for extra strength. Mine was on a bilstein setup and upgraded ARBs. There was little or no give in the suspension but was brilliant fun to drive as a road car (never rallied any of them). They do swing out but you always felt in control of the sideways action.

Are parts and stuff still readily available - I'm sure for rallying but if you wanted to restore one? I sold off RS clocks and interior bits like the clock on the passenger side for buttons. 2 full polished sets of genuine RS alloys too (not the later Capri 4 spoke).

What are you planning on rinning in it? You running Sierra Cozzy rear set up? or Mk2 stuff? Atlas axle etc.
The G4 is on a cossie back end alright, don't know how she will handle to be honest but we need to have a wide enough engine bay to fit the new lump into it as the mk2's is to narrow, basically my friend is developing a new engine for me for it, its going to be 4 cly 2000cc 8v and putting out 230bhp and loads of torque low down, but he wont let me say anymore than that
Image

But it will be at least a year before it will be finished as there is a hell of alot of work to be done.

Im not sure on the difference on the crossflow and pinto different fittings, as my first steps was always rip out std suff and start fitting all new and upraded gear, Grearbox tunnel was uprated surly, you'd fit a truck box no bother now in her
Image

Notting wrong wit the anti dive kit does the job perfectly, im running compression struts instead as the tarmac billys are more than enough to keep, the wheels on the ground under hard cornering.
Parts are as easy to get as any new car panels wise, wings, floor pans, sills, front and back panel, quarter panels bonnets, boots door skins , all door, window, boot rubbers, mirrors, lights, im not to sure about original parts like clocks vents, Side glass and the likes but im sure if money was no object they could be got.
Aw god id say your kickin yourself for selling them
Image

What ever you do Mike ..........don't drive one again, or thats it you'll have to get another

Main difference Enda is that OHV Kent or Pushrod has Camshaft in the block whereas OHC Pinto has Cam in the head.

Keep us updated on progress and don't forget pics and more video.

By the way, you used to be able to buy a (huge telephone book in size) Ford workshop manual over the counter from Ford. Great info and as good as the Robert Bentley series. Haynes also had a specific RS manual. I'll dig out part number of Ford Workshop manual for you as it may still be available.
