Here are some photos of my '91 Golf GTD:

I'm going to repaint the wheels in their traditional colour and out back on the centrecaps. And wipe the t!nt shite off the lights

How do you find it performance wise, are they much better than a straight diesel?

QUOTE (kvw @ Dec 20 2005, 04:58 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>nice car con and a rare enough machine too

is is an original irish main dealer bought jobbie or an import?

Cheers. I bought it in the north of England a few months ago. It was owned by a woman who had owned and driven it for the last seven years so it was a very straight car. Just a bit of rust on the bottoms of two of the doors and that's it. (as you'd expect from british roads)

Aye the black wheels do let it down a bit, a bit of wheel paint should sort it out. I'm getting some Acetone to clean the lights, the paint thinner wouldn't clean it

When I first got into the car I wasn't expecting much from a 1600 diesel. But the turbo and intercooler give it a nice bit of poke. It sits back on its back wheels when you put the foot down and you can feel the turbo kick in at about 2700. I was impressed. And I can't argue with 55MPG.

quick car.

Aye The MK1 GTD is some bus, well worth holding on to. Try and get some pics.

I'll post updates as they happen.

QUOTE (EoinO @ Dec 20 2005, 11:42 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Nice car. Looks very fresh. Just needs a little suspension drop.

Thanks. I was thinking of a 60mm drop. What negative affects will this have other than a bumpier ride and getting stuck in the "pot holes" on my road that would put mount vesuvius to shame.

It'd be no harm to put a sump guard of some sort on it if you go 60mm.
Are you thinking of a susp. kit or just springs? Springs on their own might affect the handling, your anti-roll bar won't be far off the wishbones either I'd say and I'm not sure if you'd have to do anything with the archs as your just running it on 14's (might be ok).

Still, go ahead and drop it, I'd go for a proper susp. kit though for that much of a drop, and it wouldn't be any harm to use eg. Bonrath top mounts/bearings or similar seen as your on bad roads a lot. Would you consider coilovers or would they be a bit expensive?

QUOTE (craig @ Dec 23 2005, 03:30 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>I have two sets of original rear lights as i have the ones from my own car and the 87 that im scrappin!!

I may be interested in them. I managed to get the tint off with paint thinner but it's very harsh and melted the plastic a bit, so now it looks dull and scored. Where are you?

QUOTE (Glenn @ Dec 23 2005, 06:56 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>A bit of fine wet and dry and some autosol metal polish on the lenses brings them up surprisingly well after they've been stripped.

Cheers for the tip, I'll try it and let you know how it went.

Ok here is an update. I added a 40mm drop, refurbed the wheels in silver, added black centre caps, back mud flaps, cleaned the tint off the lights and put back on orange indicator lenses. I gave it a wash, but it badly needs back to black on the arches and bumpers. And I have to back to GSF and get two more mud flaps.

Very nice!
Does the engine have the big or small intercooler? A m8 just picked one of these up and the intercooler is huge... I remember seeing one before and it was a little fart of a yolk with a fan?

The droppage makes some difference!

Do you still have the old black wheels? Sell em?
