well, I bought this car off a friend of my old fellas -nearely 2 years ago now (doesnt time fly hey... clock only goes one way and all that....);
I was clicking the heels with 'self satisfaction' that Id bagged such a relativeley low mileage Merc 190E, especially one with a dealer fitted AMG kit...
Image

The day after I got it, all chuffed with myself, I even gave it a wash, which is a real treat, for any car that has my name on the logbook;

I promised Id get it road worthy, improve it generally and point the the old bus on a forward pointing path generally....
....in reality, this ended up on an often sideways pointing path (on private motorway bypasses)....occasionally...

I later got convinced by my brother to sell it to him (over a few beverages); he drove it for a bit and auditioned it for 'The NCT factor' - it didnt fair too bad; failed on cracked flexi hoses (the prev. owner had let it sit up for about 5/6 months), bottom balljoints at the front etc etc.... anyhow my brother bought al load of spares for it, but never fitted them it seems; he bought a right few bits it seems as they seem to be 'turning up in different parts of the house, and the boot of the merc' recently....
He also renewed all bulbs, bought new tyres, and brought it to a Merc specialist in galway, that revealed the 'mysterey' clonking at the rear was in fact the rubber coupler, rather than a noisey diff 'get it replaced ASAP' he warned....
it also got overfilled with oil, at somestage, but it was caught in time and the 'surplus' was drained off, and 'normal service was resumed, tho the engine, previously minty n honest, with genuine NOS, light film of dirt', was now covered in oil...

Anyhow, i never liked the fact that someone else owned my old Merc, even though it was getting more TLC than when I had it, so I bought the old girl back, and you guessed it; done absoluteley nothin with it; parked it in the furtheset corner of the avenue...
To my shame I knicked the 'newish' batterey recently out of it to revive my mother's yaris, which has an appetite for batteries, the fix has to get bigger each time...

I might end up using this as a daily, as my hips are giving me trouble these days (years of activeley avoiding work and being a smart-arse on the building sites have taken their toll on the body), as does the back from limping a bit, and 'gettin on in years as I am', being cramped up in the small cab of a caddy can take its toll, on long journeys; I might put it into 'semi retirement' with classic insurance or something on it, as soon as I figure it all out...

So the idea was to start this tread to help me stay motorviated, and give the car some time/TLC and fit those parts my brother bought, and maybe even have another stab at this years 'NCT Factor' auditions again, tho I hear the judging is harsher than ever... never mind the competition.
I have a right stash of Merc 5/112 rims- 15's and bigger ('Im just outta prison' look) 18s -havent decided which to fit yet; might go for the track 'refugee' (wasnt allowed in) look -still undecided...

Cheers lads; day after I got it I fired up the hairdryer and got rid of the '1.8' badge; performance gains were immediateley noticeable
Image
... I might buy an AMG badge off of e-bay to go where the '1.8' once was, but Ive promised no more procrastination or frivolty till I get the the suspension bits, brakes etc sorted, and go before the NCT judges...!!

well this er, 'Mini project' stalled a bit... I did venture out one day to renew all brakes hoses, and ARB rubbers- 'while I was under there' - quick and easy enough jobs to be doing to get momentum going...
Well it didnt end up that way; I renewed the rear hoses and noticed that the wheels bolts, particularly 'hard to sqeeze off' - presumably the tyre centre 'ape-rative' had done them up with his favourite play thing 'the windey gun, when my brother bought the car some new tyres, when he 'owneded it' -one of the security bolts needed a socket bashing on, but the last wheel; drivers side front - security bolt 'collar' completely disintegrated and the 'special socket' didnt 'grip it enough....
many hours were 'used up' - all sockets round the 17/18mm size, even new ones were bashed on -no luck -they all slipped... dilling, even starting off with a tiny drill bit at low speed didnt tough the remainder; all drill bits were 'dulled off'.... as fluid was lost at the rear when i was doing the brake boses back there; lack of brakes, and no insurance meant didnt want to drive it to a wheel n tyre place to 'farm out' my problem....
...so motorviation waned, and for a time there I felt beaten; i did buy a €35 set draper 'anti clockwise' threading 'security locking nut removal sockets -Expert 2', which werent as 'revolutionary' and 'solution to all my problems as discribed by 't motorfactors catalogue wizard... wouldnt recommend that brandi tried them but they wouldnt catch, thread on without slipping off again...smashing.... threw them somewhere in the car... forgot about them, and the car again

..anyhow, a few weeks back I got 'bequeathed' (google that word there is right!) a rather large sledge hammer, and last week i remembered my inheritance and in a moment of sheer inspiration, also remembered I had the useless 'anti clockwise' threading 'security locking nut removal sockets -Expert 2', set ( you can see where this is leading)... and so bashed on the right sized socket all the way - in an all or nothing gamble (well had lost the reciept anyhow!!), this with a 12fit 'towing brace' breaker bar shifted it SUCCESS!!!

I coul;d hardly contain my excitement and decided to lobb on the AMG monoblocks I bought cheapish off donedeal some weeks previous;

They are/were just on there to 'mock up' - Its all wrong tyre size and needs 'mohooaaarr Lozzziszzz' - at the front at least; 15s will be going back on for NCT since theres new tyres on there and will get more studs at the breakers (need some longer ones for the Monoblocks anyhow).... and if your wondering of course I didnt finish the brake hose fittement; i was too elated to tackle brakes adfter such a 'Victory!!!

More breaking news on the protracted mini/ 'could be done in a weekend all that, the lazy basdard' project... as it happens - I hope to use this as a daily soon, n 'lay up the caddy'

nice clean merc you have, getting rare , its very easy to loose interest in things in my own experience, would be a nice daily , set of coils and plates and a good polish -enjoy

@Tom - Arthur Daly? I have no idea what the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist of the New York Times has to with the context of this thread....

@J.Lyons - i was told its already had a 'dealer supplied' lowering kit fitted, but it looks like replacent front springs maybe; the rims did exaggerate the 'tail dragging' stance... I hear you re; motorviation- I have a few other cars to mess with/fix/break bits on/render useless; so plenty of other distraction, cars wise...

Love your updates Kevin, you should really consider a career as a stand-up comedian or such.

Cool car that.

always liked these, and this looks a good one.
an easy(ish) way round the wheel nut problem is to weld a short bolt onto it, tackle it with power bar and your laughing, the heat helps as well.
is it me or the wheels look very 'forward' in the arches??

best of luck with it and the nct.

QUOTE an easy(ish) way round the wheel nut problem is to weld a short bolt onto it, tackle it with power bar and your laughing, the heat helps as well.

I did think of that -Im temporarily runnin 14in 'mini G60s' with 'slim section tyres on the caddy at the moment so couldnt bring up my gas bottle n gear; its just too low at the moment to carry the heavey bottle...

QUOTE is it me or the wheels look very 'forward' in the arches??

I thought that when looking at the pics; theres big section tyres on and the avenue there is on a slight slope, added to me proberley takin pics 'feckways' as it didnt so much look that way 'in real life'

yeah they're the exact same as yours Kevin, 17"x7.5" ET35...

there's a guy down here in cork who does a smashing job but takes his jolly sweet time...

...more merc procrastination!!
...only seem to get to give this an hour or two in the evening 'on occasion; often by torchlight and sometimes in the rain; boo-hoo me!!
... well fitted the remaining brake hoses, and the ARB rubbers (not sure why as they'll proberley need taking off again when(not if!!) I take the bottom wishbones to fit/have some else with a big press-fit the bottom balljoints; also replaced some some the wheel bolts with merc ones that protrude out from the rims; but it'll keep the Nct owl happy, when the time comes...

...This weekend, as i was goin to fermoy, I declutterd the passsenger side footwell of the caddy of various tool i pointlessly carry about -these then went into the footwell of the merc, and on returning from fermoy I decided to spend a 'leisureley' hour or two using them on the merc...

let the dog see the rabbit;
Image

the crusty batterey tray was in my sights; previous Nct show had flagged up a 'dancing batterey' - bracket that held it down had long since gone AWOL; the batterey sits in a sort of a box shaped 'bucket' on the back right of the bulkhead... batterey tray is a bolt in set up;
Image

..completely fizzled away...Going through the motions, I decided to see if it'd unbolt after an archelogical dig to find the 10mm bolts; sprayed a bit of this in there;

Image

....ate two wagon wheels, to give some time for the magic to happen, and tried briefly with spanners, bashin on sockets etc no hope completely fused, so the 'min drill'/dremel (but not a dremel) with one of its pixie cutting wheels attachements was sent into the battle; it took about 1.5hours and two mini drill drill pixie cutting discs to chop out one of the inaccessible 10mm bolts - thats a bad strike rate, so reinforcements were called in, in the form of the grinder with 1mm disc; didnt really want to go this route as access is tight, and all types of important jiggerey like the ECU, mysterey boxes with twiddly knobs and some of the loom also reside in this corner of the engine bay, and a 1mm disc on a grinder cuts whatever is in its patch... but I was either lucky or careful (lucky proberley) and 10 mins later this was extracted;
Image

I'll make/weld/beat up some sort of 'loose replica' of it and the tinking at the mo, is to affix that/secure it down with self tappers; only solution i cant think of really...

Bouyed by the relative sucess of this, i later decided to attempt a start; hadnt seen a batterey since i previous pinched it, so hadnt been started in some time... the pessimist in me thought it wouldnt start as the fuel pump was a tad noisey, last time it was started...
so 'temporarily borrowed' the caddy's batterey and connected that up; but 'no lightey, no likey' - swinging it over n over without it catching....

Trouble shooting these things as i do; decided to add 'fresh petor' to the mix' so locating a 'petor can'purchased 'a tenners worth';
Image

.. still no joy, so removing some of the tat thats built up in the boot, i searched out the fuel pump, but resorted to tapping any gadget that looked like the fuel pump with the butt end/handle of a hammer...
Success -it lives!! ...initially with it idling awhile i was shittin myself for about a minute with the oil pressure gauge still reading at 'max 3' - the old trick of slappin the top the dash sorted that and it returned to 2 and a half, which is where it should usually be;
Image

All happy, i faffed about with the space age 'HAL' type headunit, p/o brother 'keysersoze' had installed;
Image

little mini tele on it scrambles on it occasionally and it only works via the remote control, still works tho...

Next up; batterey tyray 'bashin up'/manufacture, squeezin of bottom balljoints and purchases of batterey and Prop 'biscuit coupler'
