Hi,

Newbie here,great site.

I'm buying a 06 mkv gti in a couple of days..only problem with the car is the 18" alloys are scuffed to bits.

My options are to buy replicas or to get them refurbished. I have heard it's difficult to get them refurbished properly, but I was on to Collins engineering and they admitted they had problems in the past but say they have sources a specialist laqer from the states for these wheels, and that there is no longer any problems..

Can anyone offer advice? Refurb from Collins is working out same price as a set of replicas..what should I do?

Thanks

Nuluk up north seem to be the kings of refurb on this island right now

Thanks for the reply..I tried them, £135 a wheel...takes 4 days..the logistics of getting the wheels up to them, car out of action for a week etc all just seems like an expensive nightmare...

Any reputable places in Dublin.? Are replicas a no no?

I'm sure you could borrow a set of wheels somewhere for the few days. the 18" reps look poor by comparisin in my opinion

Welcome to the site btw

Thanks:)

Where is ccr and how can I contact them? Nowhere I can borrow wheels:(..there's hardly anywhere that wound rent me wheels for the week is there?

Edit : found his details and called him, he no longer operates that service

Any other ideas?

Would the wheels from an e60 5 series fit on a gti, just to keep me mobile while I send the gti wheels up north?

The BMW ones in question are 16" , not low profile...

Thanks

i think beemers are 5x120 fitment and your car is 5x112. i've a set of 4 17 inch aez waves with tyres in 5x112. tyres are decent on them aswell. currently painted gloss red. you can have them for 60 quid.

Hi,

Where are you based, can u get a pic of them up? Seems cheap, are they in good condition?

If I was to swap these onto the gti, is it a simple case of taking the stock ones off, putting these on, or do I need to bring them to a garage to get them balanced etc etc?

Cheers.

they are cheap. cause nobody would buy the feckin things.

here's the thread
http://vagdrivers.net/forums/index.php?sho...212&hl=wave

i had them on my passat which dropped a valve and i sold on and have been sitting there ever since. if you didn't like the red you could scuff up and spray them satin black for very cheap.

i'm in waterford but i'll bring them to dub for you this weekend for €80 give me a chance to get out of town for a spin.

i'll paint them satin black and bring them up for €100

Conor,

Would it be just as easy to restore them to the original silver colour?

when i got em they were badly scuffed. to professionally restore them to original silver would be a big enough job. if you wanted i could flat them back and prime them and spray them in a gloss silver. i'm not a professional painter like but would be ok. would be looking at prob 40 quid for materials alone though. satin black would be the easiest option. alot less prep and expense required. its up to you. i'll paint them silver and deliver them for 150 say.

hey, yep that would be working out too pricey..

I haven't actually bought the car yet, deal supposed to go ahead on thursday, if it does id be interested in getting them in black instead. could you do 80 quid delivered:)

can you list the tyre size, just need to check out costs of cheapish winter tyres.

Also, is there enough tread on these tyres for say 500 miles?

ah yeah. there should be loads for 500 miles. they're not in that bad nick at all if i remember correctly and they're dunlop sp2000's and eagle f1's so not cheap tryes either. i'll pick em up today and bring em home and get a bit of satin black on them. i'll messgae you sizes then but think the wheels are 17x8 to be honest can't go any cheaper then 100 painted and delivered man. between petrol, paint and few hours spent on them i'd be givin the wheels and tyres away for nothin. as it is they're for nothing like.

Get them to Refurb the wheels as part of the deal? It's a buyers market and all that?

its a private sale.they knocked approx 500 off the price in account of the scuffed alloys, or offered to get them refurbished in dublin, but as far as I know, no one in dublin is capable of refurbishing the gti wheels to an acceptable standard..

ok,

I was on to tallaght powder coating there:

he said that basically no1 can do a proper job on 18'' detroits as the laqer used isnt up to the job.

he said what he can do, is strip the wheels back using chemicals, then blasting etc, then repair and then instead of using a laqer, he could spray them silver, which would keep the finish on the wheels way better than the clear laqer, but the wheels would obviously be a different colour.

what do people think? Can get this for under 400

he also gave me the name of a guy who is a wholesaler of alloys, said he may sell me a set of replicas direct if I tell him the story...So I did, and I can get them for 70+vat a piece.

pleeeaassee advise me!heads wrecked..
