Does anybody have an experience of these engines - what are like to drive torque wise / performance any major problems etc?. The reason I ask is that I'm currently driving a 1.4 petrol and am thinking of changing however I'm finding it difficult to find a dealer with a 1.6 in stock as a demo. Was the 1.6 102bhp engine carried over from the MkIV. Thanks in advance.

Friend of mine has a 1.6 and is quite happy with it. Does about 30k a year with no complaints so far...

I had one as a rental in Germany with the job for a few weeks last year.

Nice car, decent pickup and acceleration, nothing spectacular, engine was fairly harsh over 100mph on the autobahns, handles better than a standard mk4 gti though-you could get seasick driving one of those on a backroad...............

The fact that 1.6 demos are thin on the ground could point to problems when you go to sell it on/trade it in as 1.4's would be more common/popular among the general public......
