Hi Everyone,

I've recently joined this forum and become quite addicted to it, Once i joined, i spotted a Mk2 Golf up for dale in the Classified section on this site and i had to have it.
Luckily enough i had sold my old 306 d-turbo a few weeks prior to joining this and had a bit of money saved up, Mk2 golfs had caught my attention and i really liked the look of them and i had my eyes peeled at all times to go ahead and buy one.

I've been taking pictures of it this last month as i work on it but only got around to putting this thread up now

Here are the pictures of the golf as it was advertised on this site:

A few people might remember it being up as i only bought it a couple of months ago.
This car was well minded by previous owners and mint for a 20 year old car, i could not find any rust any where apart from surface rust on the back axle and front subframe, to be honest i've seen alot newer cars with more rust than this. I found the more i stripped it down, the cleaner it was
Image

I was at college for a month and a half after i bought the car, so i didn't get around to doing much with it, but it didn't stop me buying parts for it online and trying to max out my credit card!!
Image

Here's the list of most of the parts ordered while i was at college:
1. German Number Plates (with stadt Symbols)
2. Single Headlamp debadged 4 bar grille with mars red stripe.
3. Yellow Projector Fogs
4. Camber Adjusters for back axle
5. 16v taillights
6. Steering rack and pinion
Image

7. Single Wiper Conversion
8. Golf Ball Ariel Topper
9. Down and Out rear window decal
10. G60 arches for both front and back

When i finally finished exams and got home, i got workin on the golf at any chance i could. . I took pictures as i went along so here it goes,
SOME ARE PHONE PICS, SO QUALITY MIGHT VARY AND SOME OF THE DIGITAL CAMERA PICS ARE BLURRY (DUNNO WHY, MAYBE I'M GETTING A SHAKEY HAND!!)

First job was to fit the German plates:
Image

Next was onto changing the rear M3 taillights for the 16v lights, i taught they smoked part of the light suites the arctic grey colour of the car!!
1st pic is a half and half of each light, 16v i think looks better. . .
Image

Image

This is how the car stood when i took it home, i had lowered it slightly after i bought it, It is on a full set of FK adjustable coilovers so it was easily raised or lowered
Image

Image

The single conversion grille then arrived and the red stripe came the following day so i put them together:
This id=s the way the grille came, looked pretty bare without the red stripe!!!
Image

Fitting the red stripe:
Image

Image

If anyone has to do this to there own grille, i would recommend to have 1 person putting it on and another with a hairdryer to heat the stripe for a split second when you come to bringing it around the 4 corners of the grille, the hairdryer allows the stripe to flex more and go around each corner without leaving any kinks or creases.
DO NOT leave the hairdryer blowing against the stripe for more than a second or it will shrivel up and be useless ( i learnt the hard way!!)

One of the main parts i wanted for the golf was G60 arches, and i bought a set off DieselDave from this site. . I never taught i'd come across a set, but was lucky to find this set, so i bought them
Image
They needed a good power washing and cleaning and also needed to be brought back to colour as they had been faded to grey with to much exposure to the sun i guess!!
Image

Image

Image

I powerwashed them back and front and took this to them:
Image

It worked a treat and took them back to black again, then i sealed them with some Auto Glym Bumper care, was very happy with the results. . .

I just threw on the arches with duck tape to see what they look like, i'm not going to fit them correctly until i get my wheels and tyres and see wether they'll fit in the arches when i lower it, sections might have to be cut out or rear arches rolled, time well tell i suppose. . .
G60's tacked on!!

Think i'll hold onto the arches for the time being, keep anaye on www.ebay.co.uk. Sometimes there arches up on it for sale. .
Na, bought this car off KieranMk2 i think was his name up in south side Dublin. . .

I then moved onto de-tarring the whole car with Concept Tar & Glue Remover, i even done in behind the bumpers!!:

Image

Image

All the paintwork was very rough to the touch, so i clay barred the entire car again to remove all contaminants, which gave a good base to start polishing from etc.

Clay bar before i started:

Image

Speed Detailer acts as a lubricant and helps lift the dirt:

Image

The bodywork was very dirty, even tho i had washed it a few times before claying it, this is the clay bar after doing a small section of the bonnet:

Image

this is the small section of the bonnet that caused my clay to go from white to brown!!!!

Image

Clay bar after finishing just the bonnet:

Image

Once the whole car was clayed and all panels wiped down and i put a coat of poorboys glaze on it, i still need to seal it and wax it yet tho!!!

Next on my list of jobs to do was replace the steering rack (Non power steering model, which made life a bit easier!!)
Bad steering rack:
Image

There are 2 bolts on either side of the rack which need to be removed to allow the rack to come out:

Image

Also the gear linkages are mounted to the rack and need to be removed and left to one side:

Image

Now, my plan was to take the 2 track rods off and take the rack out by pulling it towards the front of the car (not out at the wheel arches)
To complete This successfully, i removed both track rods which was handy enough done, then i had to remove this cap which was obstructing me from sliding the rack out as this cap was rubbing against the exhaust
Image

Once it was taken off, it came out perfect. . .

Image

New rack got from DieselDave:

New rack fitted
Image
This made a massive difference as the steering was all over the shop and knocking and banging, i took it for a test drive and it was tight, exactly what i wanted

Cheers lad,it very clean, i powerwashed and degreased all underneath the chassis and arches, i couldn't get over how clean it was then, as there was a thin layer of dirt all underneath from when i bought it. . I have this 1 pic of underneath when i gave it a rough goin over, i went over to a neighbours pit and washed all underneath properly a couple of days after, no pics of them just yet
Image

Image

All sills, underneath taillights, under battery tray, have no rust, i actually cannot find any rust any where

I've alot of other stuff done and pics taken over the few weeks gone by, probably post them up later this evenin!!

The main things left are:
1. Crystal Smoked CrossHaired headlights
2. Smoked bumper indicators with city driving lights
3. Fit camber kit
4. Lower it a touch more

And by any chance could anybody recommend any thing to stick up the roof lining in the back of my car is its hanging down and really annoyin me now, It's meant to a common problem, but i'd like to fix it up nice and neat if i could
