14" Renault 21 baby-turbines for the moment until I can sort out some banded/re-rimmed steels...

just looking at that picture above, I'm going to paint the sills yellow, it'll make the car look another 4" lower without doing a thing to the suspension. There's just some black stone-chip paint brush-painted on there at the moment...

They sound the job, Funny thing is I wasn't too gone on derbys when I spotted this thread first and now I check for progress everytime I log in

I've been beavering away as time allows but what I've been at isn't really photogenic, if you know what I mean. I've rewired the whole car from headlamps to tail lamps and everything in between using the Mk3 loom. The biggest problem was making the new loom work with the old column switches. It took a good bit of head scratching but I'm 99% there. The only issue left to troubleshoot is the wipers come on with the right side indicator and the right side indicator comes on with the wipers!! I have everything else sorted.

I've fitted new disks on the front, new shoes on the back and upgraded to VWII calipers (from a mk3 golf if I recall correctly) and new pads. New flexi hoses too.

Just this morning I got my replica early bumpers in the post, they'll replace the big grey plastic late bumpers.

I ordered 175/50R14 tyres from Camskill there on Monday so they should be here today or tomorrow. I need to do a light refurb of the wheels before fitting the tyres, I don't want to make them too perfect!

I need to flip it over on it's side again to do a few jobs: I have to fit the handbrake bracket from the mk3 polo to the Derby's floor, fit the "injection" fuel tank and secure the fuel pump/filter setup at the back better than it is. I need to modify the gear selector linkage to make it work with the 5 speed gearbox too and get some underseal on the rear half of the floorpan, under the boot.

Then refit the interior and dash, refit the front and side window, replace the seatbelts with good ones, touch in the small visible areas I've fixed and fit the new wheels.

All in time for Gandon at the end of the month!!

watch this space...

Jeez, you've been busy enough! Looking forward to seeing that welding work in the flesh at the Gandon.

Cant wait to see this Trev, ill give you mine when your finished!

well I got my tyres from Camskill and gave the wheels a basic DIY refurb.

then I flipped her over again to do a few jobs on the underside.

Image

I removed the "normal" tank and fitted the mk3 "injection" tank (it has a lift pump inside) and secured the in-line fuel pump and filter assembly under the boot floor.

Image

I also cut out the mk1 handbrake bracket from under the tunnel and welded in the mk3 handbrake bracket. It's necessary to clear the later tank and to work with the mk3 rear axle. Just need to clearance the top of the tunnel for the larger handbrake mechanism.

Image

While I have it over, I've been adapting the mk3 exhaust to fit the mk1 shell (again, necessary to clear the later tank) and I have still to adapt the mk1 4-speed gearlever to work with the mk3 5-speed gearbox.

I have the rear right arch filled, sanded and primed too so that's another job done.

Image

As soon as I have the exhaust and gear selector linkage sorted it goes back down on its wheels and I sort the left rear arch, touch in a small bit of paint where necessary, fit the windows, wings, grille, bumpers and I should be good to go. Throw the carpet and seats back in and I'm ready for the Gandon next Sunday!!

just the bits I've welded and need to be touched in to match the rest. Not even going to wash it, it's got lovely algae on the bonnet and boot

bought new rear brake flexis at lunch today and when I went to fit them the long brake pipe to the rear left wheel broke away. What a pain in the ass!! I had already replaced the other long pipe because I nicked it with the grinder. I fitted the corresponding pipe from the mk3 for that one but I didn't have the other mk3 one for today's issue so I had to go buy a roll of copper brake pipe, pipe unions and a flaring kit. What a job!! I got the new pipe fitted and all connected up after much f**king about and swearing.

With that done I moved onto the exhaust. I've used the complete mk3 Polo system because it was in good shape, the original Derby exhaust was rusty and didn't have a threaded boss for the oxygen sensor. The Derby exhaust wouldn't have cleared the larger fuel tank either.
Since the catalytic convertor of the mk3 system touched off the underside of the tunnel, I took off the downpipe, knocked the crap from inside out of the catalytic convertor and bashed the flange on the rear side of it to clear the tunnel. So now the cat is a straight-through chamber rather than a restrictive mesh. Unfortunately the tailpipe of the mk3 exhaust exits at a funny angle and nowhere near the exhaust cut-out in the rear valance but it'll have to do for the moment until I can weld on a better shaped tailpipe.

Tomorrow is the gear linkage, handbrake adjustment and maybe more depending on time then it's back on its wheels

I did the same on the caddy the 21st day of the 21 day 'fix it' period of the doe fitting new wheel cylinders; kinked the hard line a tiny bit and brake fluid started to 'weep' through; I also didnt have a flaring kit and had to bomb about town looking for a garge that did -a local polish garage was the only place that did and made me a line... after fitting it and a quick bleed, I missed the doe centre; getting there at 6pm when the had shut the bays, and turned off the computers...

cheers John, it should be there alright.

today I have fitted the 5 speed shifter and linkage, filled and bled the brake system, filled the cooling system, threw in a few litres of fuel, connected the battery and lo and behold: it fired up and ran!!

I still have the same fast idling problem I experienced when the engine was in the mk3 polo and since nothing changed I'm not surprised. I'll try to figure it out later. For now I'm happy that it runs.

I cut out the hole for the larger mk3 handbrake lever and fitted and adjusted the handbrake cable. Fitted the handbrake warning light and two interior passenger assist straps too. Lots of small jobs but each is one step closer to the road!!

...if its single point injection, rather than carb, it sounds like the 'idle speed stepper motor' on the SIP ; that or the temperature sensor... more likely the stepper motor tho... you seem to work at 'frenetic' pace that I can only envy trevor; I am out of work just now, but even so, so many distractions always seem to get in the way of a 'clear run' of a couple of hours at a particular area that needs attention; fair play mate...
