I want to give the MAF a clean on a Mark IV Golf and was wondering what to use to do it? I think I read before about some solvent??? Is it just a matter of wiping it with a damp rag? Do I just pop it off and wipe the underside or whats the best way? Anyone done this and if so any help appreciated, Thanks.

best not to actually touch the filament, AFAIK its a hot wire and quite fragile... use Isopropyl alcohol, available in aersol form from Maplins etc...

best you can do is just spray the MAF liberally and allow it to evaporate, this can be doen by either removing the MAF from the housing or just spraying into the intake trunking, leave a least an hour before starting up to make sure all alcohol has gone...

AFAIK replacement MAF is approx 80 yoyos so worst case, replace...

I just had mine replaced 98 euro better off replacing imo! could do more damage and end up worse than it was to begin with. There is a guide how to clean it on uk-mkivs using electrical contact cleaner available from halfords. And if your gonna replace it VW do an exchange, Basically they fix your old one and sell it again. They'll try and charge you an hours labour to change it, Well they tried to charge me until I said I'd do it myself.
