Just out of interest how many people is the recession really hurting or is it being hyped by the media?

At the moment I feel very lucky to say it hasnt really had much of an impact on me. I know I seem to be in priviledged position but it hasnt really changed anything for me. It seems the same with my friends too in fact two have just resigned jobs and will be starting new ones shortly. The only person I know that has really been hit by it is someone who has been knocked back for a mortgage.

Am I just lucky and Im living in a ubblbes of good fortune or is it press gone into hyper overdrive?

Tis bad down here in Limerick alright, people all around me losing their jobs, plenty of closed businesses, even in my own business there is a significant fall off in work, but whats worse is trying to get money from customers, something which we never had a problem with before.

^this!

18 months ago my wife started a course along with 30+ other people where they were guaranteed a job at the end. Over the last 6 months the number of jobs fell until there was only 5 available. She didn't manage to get a place but is second in line when a job becomes available but even then they won't be giving permanent contracts. So come the end of next week we're both out of work because of the recession. So i'm going to have to go with yes

Cheers. In fairness i was going to leave work to go to college in sept anyway but that was based on Hanna having a stable job and the few extra months saving would have been nice. We're fairly sure she has another job lined up so things should be grand

We're lucky that we don't have a mortgage hanging over us unlike a lot of people so we can't complain too much

Sorry if you think im being ignorant I dont mean to come across that way. Im not in a mega money job, we are a single income family at present so Im not exactly rolling in it.

As I said I am very lucky from what I read but have had no real exposure to it so far (thank the lord) so I can only talk about my circumstances. This could all change the end of the year when my company takeover is completed though. Sorry if it has upset you twail.

You didnt upset me, im just pointing out that its a sensitive area at the moment, and advertising that it hasn't had an effect on you is a bit unconsiderate!

A good few of my friends are apprentices and are all out of work, just sitting at home between phases of fas.

Few of the other lads are coming to the end of their time in college and are aware of the fact they'll be hard pressed to find a job when they get their degree.

Im self employeed and have never seen things as quiet as they are now, ive spoken to reps all over the country and in the uk and im getting the same answers all over, retail is quiet, very quiet! Things arent picking up for a while, if it doesnt affect you now well and good but it will eventually so make sure you have something to fall back on if money gets tight.

The ripple effect .
Through a peddle in a lake and watch .

With every day ,not week this is getting worse .
This recession will effect you in some way just has not got to you yet .
Working capital is killing every buissness at the moment .Even the big ones .

Most companies are looking at putting workers on 3 day weeks .
This way they dont have to pay redundancy pay or pay there prsi or anything.
Then they reduce it too 2 days etc etc .There is a job there for you but just slow at moment .

In Dublin and in particular IT, people and companies are getting hammered. Projects are being canceled, postponed and stretched out.

Jobs and in particular contractors are being shed left, right and center which I believe is somewhat buffering the bad news in the IT sector. Vendors are being asked to withdraw their people. Once the buffer that vendors and contractors provide is cleared we are into full time employee (FTEs) and that's when reality will hit home.

The Financial Sector and Gov is in a complete downward spiral. At same time, I don't believe we are through this in fact I think it has only begun.

This is not based on what I have read or heard as I have given up on the medias coverage but rather based on actual fact from working directly with people in the above sectors.

Its f**kin crazy, companys and businesses arnt happy unless their makin 100%-200% profit... if they dont make that they dont want to make any...Greedy bastards..no loyalty to staff!!! But i tell ya theres gonna be alot of oppertunities for people to set up some businesses to replace these wankers!!! cut profits down to 60% employ some local people and still make a hell of alot of money!!

I consider myself quite lucky that I'm not affected personally, although I'm in college so haven't got a job or any of that lark. Both my parents have good jobs in AIB (dodgy at the moment but both secure). The only way we've been hit is quite a large sum of value taken off my dad's shares. Down from €20 two years ago to less than €1 now.

I hope everyone pulls through this and gets by ok until the economy recovers. This wasn't meant as gloating that my family is doing ok when I know that a lot out there aren't.

i have just been put on a 3 day week and am looking into all of this shit.

I can hardly take this tread seriously; are you that cocooned from the outside world that you can see whats happening in the country???
take a minute to wake up and know your world; here a few giveaway 'signs'; lots of 'closing down sales, dormont, empty, shop units and a big drop off in new 09 reg cars, not to mention to lengthy dole queues...

The truth is the recession has been for quite awhile now, and only recently 'revealed' by our government controlled media; the kept the truth from the public for long enough, to keep them spending and living in 'the bubble'...
...are we expected to believe, truthfully, that you've seen little of the recession and are still secure in your 'bubble'...???

QUOTE (razor @ Mar 3 2009, 11:08 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>lads i think mike Was really just asking, dont take it the wrong way.i know things are pretty shit out there for everyone.

I just find it a very strange and perhaps 'loaded' question to ask, given the present circumstances, economy wise, and I find it hard to believe that someone hasnt 'witnessed/heard/observed' some of the fallout from the recession; its not that I am over-sensitive about my current 'lack-of-regular-work' status... ...its not the first 'recession/downturn' or whatever Ive experienced in my lifetime (showing my age) and its not going to make me all panicey, or a doom-monger...

....no matter what the media burt out, day to day, If you genuinely cant see all the signs, then you are walking around blindfolded or in some sort of incurable brain-fog....
