as far as i know so long as the car is over 25yrs old you can use black plates. i even think you can use a front numberplate 1/3 standerd size, although this may be 30 yrs. my friend has a mk1 escort and he keeps getting stopped over his plates, they are black and the front is tiny
Image
, but he has the legislation in his car at all times and they,(the law), have to let him go with a sour taste in their mouths.

check it out on line or at a tax office.

I wonder do they like German font?
Image

The german font was made to be very easily readable as no two digits are the same / similar so no confusion.

So basically speed cameras / the Guards should love them, you're making their job easier

If it was first registered in Ireland on or after 1st January 1991 its supposed to comply with the current regulations regardless of its original date of registration.

So a pre 91 import registered in Ireland from 91 on is subject to the 91 on regulations.
