Hi all,

With the way things are at the minute, Im just curious to see how many are currently out of work and what work do you do?
Im nearly 2 months out of work and the jobs market seems very quiet at the minute. Im qualified to work in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries and although there are some jobs out there, the competition is fierce at the minute which means there are more senior people applying for the same roles as me!

Anybody else in a similar boat? How are ye finding job hunting and what do you do to keep yourself sane during the day!

If anyone is out of work and has some good experience in IT (application design and development, analysis, project management, infrastructure, sys admin, architecture etc) please send me a PM.

I haven't had a job in 16months. I worked for three years as a Injection Moulding Technician until i was 19. Started getting pushed around from someone up stairs, and subsequently left. I then spent about a year or two running from recruitment agency to recruitment agency but only getting a few days work here and there.

I then got lucky and got a job in a Pharmacuetical plant (through an agency) in which i spent two years busting my bollocks. Only to be told there is no position. ( Shit is your thanks )

Since then ( 16 month's ago ) i can probably count the amount of weeks work i have had on one hand! I have been doing courses every now and again to keep me from going insane!

Nick, how can you be an injection moulding technician at 16? And what did ye make?

As for work, and the country, its in a big mess and will be for a long time, Id say if you cant get work then try and think of ways to earn money rather than waiting for a job to land on your lap, I know that sounds easy, but its is the only way, the jobs just aint out there.

I started off as a General Operator in a Plastics Factory and then got a promotion! I never went through the books if that's what you're wondering. We made everything from Inserts to Buckets to Drain pipes! Absolutely loved it! Loved the noise, loved humping moulds from machine to machine. But couldn't live with what i'd call bullying.

It was my first job. I was young at the time and in hindsight maybe could of handled the situation better. But i wasn't to be!

Thanks for the advice. It's very much appreciated. I have been trying things here and there. I am currently chasing up a pastime and will see how far it gets me!

Who do you get onto and is there any in the line of car maintenance??
I have just finished a photography course in St. Johns College. I have also just signed up for a Web Design course through FÁS.

FÁS is a good place to start. Although i did attend a college by the name of Colaiste Stiofan Naofa (CSN) after i left school a few years back and seem to remember them having a rather neat car maintanence setup there.

Here is a Automobile Engineering link for CSN.

I will add that it is a fantastic college. Very nice people there, the tutors are excellent and it's a pretty relaxed atmosphere of what i can remember!

i got made redundant a year ago yesterday, 2 weeks after i got married, and like said above could probably count the weeks ive worked on 1 hand, but that said im a survivor, do a bit of buying and selling and wheeling and dealing, its a case of having to with a mortgage, wedding loan and 3 kids...i have also done a few courses and just got a letter in the door today offering me 2 computer courses so im going to go to the interviews and see what happens, its true what they say "BUST YOUR BALLS AND YOU'LL GET SHIT ON" but i have enjoyed being a stay at home dad but the holidays are here now so there will be more pressure in the house, a big help is that we take students and my missus works part time aswell so things arent all bad, keep the head up lads there is money to be made out there....

Any course is a good course as it keeps your mind ticking over but just be careful of selecting a course in an area that is not already saturated.

It's just my perception so I'm not saying I am right or wrong but Fas IMO are a long way off the pace in terms of providing career and training that is relevant for future survival, career building and to a degree to help you reinvent yourself if thats what you need to do.

Just finished an 8 month contract here in the states doing IT Support. I was hoping to come home soon if the jobs picked up but they havent. There are jobs here but its all contract and agency stuff where I am. Im waiting on one place for a month to let me know about a full time spot.
Im about finished studying for a Cisco CCNA cert which seems like a must have in IT lately.
Theres a company in the UK called FDM a friend went thru last year for more serious IT work Im looking at if I cant get anything here.

edit: your inbox is full Mike!

was let off at the end of april.. lucky enough i got took on on a fas ce scheme! something to pass a few hours..

imo there are very few interesting fas courses do. there is about a year of a waiting list for the basic welding one in my aera but yet there are 2 or 3 advanced ones being addvertised!! people are doing computer ones for the sake of doing one!! also lots of security courses! there will be more bouncers in this country in the next few months than there will be people in the pubs/clubs

The options I see I have are as follows:

1. Stick at what im at, keep hunting for work, live on jobseekers and whatever other money I can get from detailing, odd jobs etc. until I get another position (more than likely a 3-6 month contract position the way the pharma sector has gone)

2. Try and go back to college for a post grad degree (I really want to do a chemical engineering masters in Limerick but i wouldn't get back to education allowance and don't know where I could get the money from to put myself through college for another year)

3. Start looking abroad or take the plunge and move abroad with only enough money to last one month before the bank gets on my back reagrding loan repayments.

I really want to do #2 or #3 but haven't the money for either. If anybody has done any of these before, I'd really love to hear how they did it and their experiences
