I'm looking at getting a set of hid lights for the Golf off Keith, but I don't know the difference between the different kits, any Mk4 owners on here running a set, any pics? What type would look the best on a Mk4?

K, thanks didn't understand the whole hid thing before.

You would need a H7 kit and then decide the colour of light you want.
I can't stand the things in standard headlights, I think they look terrible but that's just my opinion.

Do you mean hid's look terrible in oem headlights or the normal bulbs in oem headlights look bad?

HID's look terrible in oem lights, normal bulbs or factory xenon's is the way forward. The sooner the better they are an nct failure. Again just my opinion

i agree, i wouldnt bother with a HID kit unless you have projectors. if they are in reflector headlamps they will just dazzle everyone coming towards you and they wont give out a very effective light at all because its too scattered, waist of money. might be worth getting a set of OEM Xenon units for the golf to put the hid kit into. or just upgrade your bulbs. i upgraded my bulbs and they are fine. big improvement.

Got mine from autobulbs, do a search there is a thread about autobulbs direct with a discount code. They do plug straight in, they are a H7 bulb. Don't expect a huge difference but they are slightly brighter.
Are the lenses of your lights in good condition? If they are scratched and dulled this will reduce the light from them, a good wetsand and polish will bring them back.

My headlights are in good nick, I'll look into a pair of these.

Thanks for all the help.

Never looked at them too closely but I suppose you're right. I was considering they may be an option to the MK1 candles but when you put it like you do above they probably would look crap

i had hids in the bora and the leon. they give out great light but reflectors will scatter it about a lot. i fitted projectors to the leon and they made some differance. the lines are a lot better and not as scattered. saying that i never had any problems with them in the standard lights as in being flashed etc. i wouldnt get anything more than 6000k do as i think they get a little too blue after that and draw attention to the fact you have them. i had 4300k in the leon and they looked like brighter standard bulbs but they gave out great light. a worth while mod if you get your lights aligned and keep the lenes free from dirt and muck

i upgraded with philips extreme for both dip and mainbeam for the arctic circle trip. they were quite good, but as im sure your aware with the passats, they blow bulbs like nobody's business, first 1 blew after about 3 or 4 months. i was strapped for cash so i just picked up some halfords blue/white bulbs for the dip which are the best i have come across so far. good light off them.

i dont mind spending money on halfords shitty bulbs cos the passat blows bulbs far too often to justify the expensive stuff. i try all sorts of bulbs all the time. the halfords ones are the ones i would go for tbh. phillips and osram are well over-priced.

Can projecter lenses be retro'd to std housings?

Or is it a complete head light change?

HID's are on the cards for me as well, Did much reading inc few pics and vids on other sites and will wait on gettin projectors setup so don't tick everyone off!

I know it sounds silly but it doesn't annoy me as much now (light output) as changed the driver's lamp due to a chip [which IMO improved things], and not driving nearly as often under lights now... longer days etc...

Let us know what ya do anyway.
