Hi, know a guy going to england next weekend to

bring a car. The car is not taxed and

he is wondering would happen if the guards stop

him on the road? Would it just be a fine?

Thanks again.

Im in england, they can take the car and crush it for not having tax. id say they would prob be ok with it tho as long as you can prove you taking it out the country.

Im not sure what you're asking really, but there are no Guards in the UK, just Police. I presume that your friend is going to the UK to buy a car? If so, once he doesn't act the maggot on the way home, he really should be fine. If stopped, just tell them that you've just bought the car and that it's going to Ireland. They can technically take the car from you, but the cahances of that happening are slim unlesss you've something really bad. They'll be grand as they can't really do anything to the driver. The previous owner could get a fine, that's all. It's best to get some sort of a receipt to prove that the car have just been bought.

Myself and another forum member were stopped last year near Chester on the way to the ferry in 2 cars with no tax or MOT.

We drove past a van at the side of the road which read our reg numbers and when our reg numbers showed up as having no tax police officers up the road were alerted and came after us and pulled us over.

One of the police officers wanted to get the DVLA out with a car transporter and take the cars off us! The other one was a bit more reasonable and let us provide a UK address of one of our relatives so we could be fined.

You need a UK address or else you won't be able to take the fine.

There was no question of them just letting us go even though we showed them the ferry booking we had made which meant we were only going to be in the country for another hour and a half!

Agree with Geo.

Last time I brought a car in I got talking to a guy bringing in a BMW on the ferry. They took the car off him and he had to go through the motions including cancelling his previous ferry and rebook it. It happended about 50 miles from Holyhead.

Unless your friend has to check the car over would he consider getting someone to lift the car and transport it in. Some people on this forum have done this before.

or just take your chances

as a general rule, i would say geo was unlucky with the van at the side of the road, under NORMAL circumstances, uk police arent allowed to randomly pull over unless they suspect an offence has or is being committed, so if youre not acting the c0ck youll be fine. think they have to quote anti terrorism laws to pull you over for no offence, so leave the beard and turban at home....

but they can pull you over if they think the car is nicked, happend to me they just slap on the blue disco lights an pull you over then ask you the reg number of the car

I would chance it but take it easy speed wise while in the UK, get a reciept and have your ferry ticket handy to prove your taking it out of the country, and don't have an attitude with the cops, they mostly pull you over after scaning the reg with their no plate reconizer system, if the cars not taxed or on sorn - you will get pulled - most cops will let you carry on.

Ask the seller for a written receipt, and keep his phonenumber handy. Saved me lots of trouble in Holyhead.
Also, if you're asked, just say you had it trailered to the port - again, a good idea when travelling MOT/Tax-less.

And try not to eat the road too much... you can talk your way out of anything else, but there's little arguing if you're caught flat out.

Arrest and either hold you for the next available Court or a sizeable Bail / Surety to make sure you appear for Court, same as the PSNI up here with guys from the South.

i got stopped at holyhead.. my mk2 had german style plates on it (uk reg though).. the customs thought i was german until they noticed i was sitting in the 'passenger seat!' They made me get out and i'd a hard time convincing them it was a uk reg! Showed them the V5 but they were still a bit sus! They thought i was pulling of a robbery from mainland europe!! Thankfully they let me go eventually after i convinced them i was a innocent young irish guy and that it had german plates coz VW's are german... their parting comment was 'german style plates... thats a bit of a stupid idea isnt it?' lol!

BEWARE..It actually happened me going in the opposite direction. I was on the Rosslare to Fishguard ferry in my wifes X5 4.4i on UK plates without tax and low and behold 50m after disembarkment there was a joint customs/police checkpoint checking all passenger vehicles. They were checking for tax/ins.

I told the lady (who seemed to be fair) the truth, i.e. I had never re-registered the car in Irl and that I was bringing it back to the UK after a year to sell it to a acquaintance (which was true). I was able to prove that the car was fully insured which I think saved the day. She let me drive on
