One of my friends has a mk4 gti and its central locking went nuts yesterday
it started trying to lock every 10 secojnds, i told him to check the cable is broken, it was dark when he was onto me so he couldnt see
he went to a garage this morning and they told him the problem was from the boot lock
I remember reading in the old forum that there was a problem with some mk4 boot locks but cant remember exactly what it was

Yeah the boot lock lets in water from the rear washer jet pipe which breaks off. If he unplugs the connector on it as a temporary measure it should be fine. New boot lock needed though. I think on the Bora's you can buy a new microswitch but not the Golf.

Also if your washing the car and lift up the leaver to wash in around the boot lock (i.e. with the car fully locked) water can get in and trickle down onto the lock and the sensor. I did this and the light on the dash board indicating that the boot was open kept staying coming on. Since the sensor is rivoted onto the boot lock you have to buy a new boot lock c.Eur35 from main dealer...funny enough they had plenty of boot lock's in stock.

mine did exactly like your friends Rich, and it was a severed wire in the door jam.

with the door open he should squeeze and/or tap the bundle of wires that run into the door, if it locks/unlocks it's one of these.
