My car is a 2000 golf 1.8T with 02J box. Haynes manual says 75-90w

I dont fancy being bummed by the dealers for this stuff. I can get the following in my local autofactors.

Castrol Syntrax Universal (semi synth) 75-90w

Castrol SMX-S (fully synth) 75-85w

Can anyone tell me which of these is best or should I lube up my 'down-belows' and go to the dealers.

Is that the six speed box?

I think my car has the 02M box....anyway, I've just ordered 3 bottles of redline mt-90 gear oil for my car. Supposed to be very good stuff and improve the gear change. Mine can be a bit notchy from 2nd to 3rd sometimes.

Red Line Oil's MTL and MT-90 are designed to provide excellent protection and improved shiftability for manual transmissions and transaxles, having cured the problem of hard shifting in thousands of transmissions with shifting troubles. How? They have the appropriate coefficient of friction for most manual transmission synchronizers (many gear oils, engine oils, and ATFs are too slippery for proper synchro engagement). And, the wide viscosity of MTL and MT-90 allow proper shifting over the entire temperature range which the transmission will experience. The synthetic base oils used have a very high viscosity index which provides relatively constant viscosity as temperature changes. MTL is a low 70W at very low temperatures and a high 80W, nearly an 85W, at elevated temperatures, providing adequate viscosity to prevent wear and deaden gear noise. MT-90 is a thicker 75W90 version of MTL. The shear stability and oxidation stability of these products are excellent, thus the physical characteristics of Red Line MTL and MT-90 will change little with use.

No mine is a 5 speed. Its starting to get a bit notchy in 1st and 2nd. Ive adjusted the gear linkages and its a little better.

The gearbox oil is low so id rather put in fresh stuff than top up the old one.

Ive read about that redline stuff alright but didnt know where to get it here in Ireland. I didnt know you could have chemicals delivered by post, I thought it was against safety regulations or some shit.???

Thanks for the reply and the link.

and slightly overfilled to the top a the level indicator to get the selectors to sit slightly higher in gear changes,
worked a treat as was having issues with 2-3rd gearchanges at high revs...

Hope this helps,

Jon

I'm having the same problems with 2nd-3rd at high revs, thanks for the tip
