The use of any transmitter, including the iTrip, Belkin Tunecast, and other products to transmit audio on the FM band is illegal here and in the UK because under broadcasting laws, you cannot transmit an FM signal (any distance) without a radio broadcasting license.
There are some manufacturers (Belkin, for example) who are currently trying to get the governments to effectively change the law so that a broadcasting license will only be required if your transmitter is transmitting beyond a certain distance (5 metres for example), but until this change takes place, these devices (which can be legally bought in other countries, such as the USA and are not illegal to import to the UK or Ireland) will remain illegal to use here.

I saw a few FM transmitters (xtrememac airplay2) for sale at laptopcity in the St.Stephens Green center the other day...
I thought they were illegal as well, but it has not stopped this shop from selling them. The are easy to get on ebay anyway...
I bought a Airplay2 for my iPod a few months ago., works pretty good as fm transmitters go...
