i was just on wikipedia, was looking up the story of VWs Corrado, and the made a 1.8lt 16v and then a 2.0lt 16v but the same hp >> 134 hp

so what is the difference, if there is an increase of 0.2 in engine cc why is there not a increase in hp? or is Wikipedia wrong?

or am i missing something?

Happened to lots of cars in the early 90s as the switch to catalytic converters was made.

Another example in the VW range is Mk2 GTI 8v 1.8 112bhp with no cat, Mk3 GTI 8v 2.0 115bhp with cat.

Lots of cars actually ended up with reduced power outputs because of it.

And will a (petrol) car that came with a cat originally but doesn't have one now have no chance of passing emissions test, or is there another way around that?

Depends on the year of registration, in Ireland cars registered before 1st January 1994 are subject to the non cat emissions levels so should be fine without the cat.

So if the cat was removed from the 2.0 examples would hp increase? 134-150 for instance

The abf has 159mm rods dont forget, which leads to a longer piston dwell time at top dead centre, putting less pull on the port as it starts to descend therefore aiding port filling as there is slightly more time for the air to get entering at lower rpm, > more torque.

More or less..

definatley the CAT. if you look up for example the US spec mk2 golf gti 16v, they are only rated at 129bhp because of the cat which was a legal requirement back in the day state side!
