Considering A 2004 3.0 Tdi A6..

Afternoon all,

So as the title says I'm thinking of a change from my current 2.0 TDI Passat to a 3.0 TDI Quattro A6, so I've a few questions if ye don't mind
Image

My current Passat is a 06 Comfortline model with 235000 km on the clock and a full on-time main dealer service history.
Most of those miles have been on motorways and she's never given any real problems beyond wear and tear stuff for that sort of driving,
has had the timing belt changed twice as per the schedule, injectors changed under the recall, and the fuel pump was changed last year
as well.

- I already know about the tax bill.. double what I pay now, but I work it out as an extra €60-ish a month which isn't too bad when I just
cancelled eircom for €70 a month

- What about fuel costs? A full tank in the Passat costs me just under €100 at the moment and lasts about 1000km - or a fortnight with
my mixed urban/motorway driving. How much more would it cost me in a 3.0 TDI? Both cars are auto - the Passat having DSG.

- Servicing costs. My Passat has never cost me less than €400/500 per service for oil, filters, suspension bits (as above, really just
wear and tear items mostly). How do the Audi rates compare?

- Known issues to look for? I had a long chat with the guy selling it and he comes across as a decent sort and tells me it's 100% but
naturally I'll want to check it over anyway. Anything I should be looking out for?

- Cost to change (including my own) is about €2500 he says valuing mine at 5k. Does this sound about right/average?
The car I'm looking at has about 100k MILES on it and does look spotless from what I've seen so far.

- Am I mad to be even considering this??

Any feedback greatly appreciated... cheers!

Problem there is it has to be auto and the 06 A4 I looked at at the time I was buying the Passat had no rear legroom. I'm also not a big fan of estates.

QUOTE (Simon @ Feb 9 2013, 06:46 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>if youre happy to be violated for that amount of road tax go for it, the other option i'd be looking at would be a 520D BMW,
Mate of mine has a 09 520D and I never liked that design (the new/current F10 is a different story though). Plus I think the interior is awful and again no rear legroom. Agree with you on the tax point but on the plus side it means the car itself is cheap(ish) as a result.

Maybe if I outline some of the reasons why I'm looking at this car it might make more sense:

- I do a long motorway spin twice a month at the moment plus other daily driving etc. Might as well be comfortable I figure

- The benefits of an older model like this means any issues should have been fixed by now plus it won't have been bought by the "cheap tax" brigade who then just do the school run in it and cause all sorts of potential nastiness for the next owner. Diesels are meant to be driven after all

- It's big. It'll need to take a baby/childseat comfortably with all his bits in the boot, plus shopping and whatever else. An A4 or even the 520D wouldn't compare IMO

- Leather is easier to (keep) clean than the cloth seats in my Passat which wasn't an issue until himself came along

- I've like this model A6 since it came out and have said for ages I'd get one. Now I might be able to get a good specced, decent one with non-starship miles for the age, and I feel like treating myself after a rough few years. I don't smoke, only drink socially which is rare enough as most of my mates are married/settled too so why not?

Aside from the tax issue though, is there any other reasons why I should be looking at something else, or that I should be checking for/asking about?

Cheers for the replies

Just thought I'd update the thread...

Had a look at the car in question yesterday, and while it drives very well - no rattles or weird noises etc - it's not quite as "spotless" as advertised.

- Lot of scratches/scuff marks on the bodywork that would bug me but which I COULD get sorted I suppose. Small dent (bout the size of the fuel cap) behind the right rear door but no rust/broken paint (could maybe be pulled out?)
- finger sized gap between the front bumper and the side wing (both sides)
- Interior is in good nick but the centre console trim is marked and would need to be replaced (again something that would bug me otherwise)
- Has the full color screen/computer. No phone or Nav system though (expensive to retrofit the phone? Nav I wouldn't care about)
- Xenon lights, DRL, Coming home lights etc all on the car as well
- More worryingly: Warning errors about the parking brake and traction control/ESP systems

It does have a full dealer history (well it has stamps from the dealer) and it's NCT is valid till June 2014
Strangely though he just walked around mine and looked inside it. Didn't even start it??

Anyway, he rang me last night and said he'd want mine (which he's valuing at €5000) and €2500 cash. In the interim I of course have been looking at alternative options and his is one of the oldest listed and most expensive. Told him this and that I couldn't justify that money based on the condition but that if the brake/ESP errors were fixed and the history checked out I might be prepared to deal at a significantly lower price (thinking more like €1000 + mine)

Were it not for the combination of the spec all being in the one car I'd walk away and I left it in his court anyway to come back to me so I'm not hanging on for it or anything, but for an almost straight swap with the main faults fixed it might be ok? That said, I think if a better option came up I'd go for that anyway

oh please. Have lots of friends with 2.0tdi. Every 100k km you have to change oil pump axle. Thats it. As for v6 3.0, timing chain - every 150-180k km, costs a lot, cause you have to remove your engine, dpf problems, swirl flap problems, and commonrail system problems. 2.0 is more economical, less troubles, easy to service, and after chiptunning you'll have ~180hp, so ~40hp less than 3.0. the 3.0 have only one good thing is quattro.

So this was more of a thread to tell us that your thinking of trading a good passat for a overpriced rough maintained A6 that you know nothing about, and the justification for it is that you need to have plenty of leg room in the back for a kid and does a long journey 24 times a year and needs a heap of new bits inside and some body work as well and you haven't put a link to the car so we can see it

Who are ye trying to convince this is a good deal !

did you tryed c6 a6? I don't think so. Audi have more comfort than 2 passats together... And I am not talking about all audi mmi high, interior quality and other bits. Passat is not bad, but it's not rival for audi.
