They are no use as many don't work and you have to use an old shareware version of VCDS which can't do much. By buying these leads you are also making it harder for Ross Tech to develop and roll out new updated versions of VCDS to the people who went out and bought genuine versions of the lead.

i bought the lead off ebay. i messed around with it for a while but a lot of the functions dont work. i bought the licence off ross tech and it improved but if i was buying again i would go for the genuine cable and software

dunno, i bought one off ebay, allows you to read the error codes but not to write any changes
it read any ecu modules that were available on corrado and b5.5 passat, have plugged it into an a6 too and a few other cars and reads codes fine.

definatly worth the 15 yoyos i paid, if you just want to read error codes. al;l the codes can be interpreted via rosstech website and internet. grand for the minor messin i do.

if you need full functionalty/writing codes or if its for garage use then yea go for the rosstech original.

(you might need a bit of tech savvy to get it working right as theres some usb drivers to be configured and playing with the COM ports setttings in rosstech to get it working nice)

QUOTE (liamO @ May 27 2011, 11:17 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>The VCDS team are good enought to support the forum and accordingly the forum does not support the use cloned copies of VCDS . It is a great tool with free updates and excellent technical backup . if you buy genuine you will get the purchase price back many times over .

I actually bought one from donedeal for €80 before. I didn't have a clue what I was buying but its a pirated copy. Works 100% though. I actually gave it to a friend and bought the proper one. But they were identical in functionality.

LOL, everyone jumps on clones of the vagcom cables, there illegal, you taking money away from rosstech for R&D, but most of the guys on here run reps, go figure, I used a cheapo vagcom cable for logging with an old version of vagcom, it works a treat. If i need to make adaptations i use my "legal" version of vag-check.

Btw the ebay cables also work with limmiwinks

Basically if I read RobieRolex correctly, he is saying that the people who cry about the illegal product are ones who sell for Ross-Tech.

Hmmm... Robbie I don't think that to be the case. We have only one Irish distributor and yes he is a sponsor of this forum yet most forum members do not buy from him. The forum moderators are not distributors for us yet they choose to support our efforts to bring a high level VAG diagnostic tool to market at a reasonable price. They do so because like the owner of Ross-Tech, they love their VAG rides and they want to help the community.

We understand that price can be an issue for those working on their own car. Money is tight everywhere in this world. So we understand that some will find the price of our product to be too much for them.

What I don't understand is why some buyers choose to support those that steal from Ross-Tech in order to make money - cause that's all they do. You don't see the ebayers here reading and answering questions. You don't see them giving out a tech support email address to users of their product because they don't have a clue how the product works or what can be done with it. They only know how to steal it, copy it and distribute it, lining their pockets with money. It sure doesn't cost anything to steal a product. Why will people spend their money with a thief who brings no value to the table instead of investing their money with the company that made the whole deal possible?

Oh now I have done it, I have opened the other argument: Ross-Tech didn't make it possible - Ross-Tech just stole the information from VAG. It is right that VAG makes the deal possible. They made the cars and the technology. Without VAG, there is no need for a diagnostic tool. If Ross-Tech had "stolen" information from VAG, do you think we would still be in business 11 years after the introduction of this product. I assure you, the VAG lawyers would have shut us down a long time ago.

Others with whom we compete, choose to sell their solution for diagnostics at 20X the price (or more) we sell our solution. The owner of Ross-Tech wanted the enthusiasts around the world to have a tool that they could use to work on their cars as he wanted to work on his. He spent countless hours figuring out how VAG modules communicate to the diagnostic port. He documented it and wrote a piece of software that has expanded with each year since he introduced it in 2000. He has given his life to this endeavor and for some to just trivialize what he has done is just - - wrong.

Do you have any idea how many other tool manufactures have now copied the information found in our tool to make their own tool? Are you aware that what Ross-Tech has done is to create the defacto world standard for VAG diagnostic tools? What Uwe Ross did and continues to do is to bring the best to the table at an affordable price. What the ebayers did was to copy Uwe's work and undersell Uwe because they did not have to spend the weeks and months and years of 16+ hour days, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, to bring you the tool you now use. If we ever were to look at the true cost to put this tool in the marketplace, if we ever tried to recover all the cost of that effort, we too would be selling the product for 20x it's current price and we would not be talking in this forum because no enthusiast could afford that product.

What Uwe Ross and through his company Ross-Tech did for the community goes unappreciated by many. To those who do appreciate the efforts we made and continue to make, thank you, thank you, thank you. We cannot say those words often enough. We appreciate your continued support.

No where did I say that, so you don't read correctly and TBO I got bored halfway through your little rant and couldn't be bothered to read it all, why should I when you are miss quoting, hope you didn't spent to long typing it up.

I'm seriously considering buying the genuine version, does the distributor post or contribute here at all, it would be good to get some info.

What is the craic with the pricing between the pro kit@€499 and the promo kit @399 and the pro kit just includes a colour manual

Is there any discount for forum members?

I got mine from the US on a upgrade, i paid $99 for registration then spend out on the genuine lead. But what i learned was that then theres tax put on. THink it was a extra €60, so keep that in mind if you are buying from the US
