The Mk4 1.4/1.6 16v is about the worst as far as I am concerned.

As for the best, well take your pick, there is a massive choice.

 

Hmmm the MK4 2.0 ltr Engine.....what a ball of shite,i cant belive they called it a GTI in the UK.but yea the 1.4 and 1.6 are bad to,fecken piston slap!!!!

best theres loads,1.8T, 130TDI ,2.0TFSI, G60, KR.....the list goes on

the 16v G60 is one of my favourites. 2 Brilliant VW engines had sex and this was their child. Also i feel the 1.6 diesel engine needs a mention, so bullet proof, able to take so much abuse, iconic.

It not VW but its a VAG engine - the audi ur 5 cylinder turbo is a cracking engine.

 

I was going to suggest the 1.9 diesel as fitted to ventos etc (non sdi). Bulletproof, economical, simple and without the headgasket troubles of the 1.6d.
In the petrol group i'd nominate the 1.8t, nice power, torquey low in the revs, unlike the more reliable ABF which has no torque below 3k rpm.

And for the worst i'd nominate the 1.4 mk4 engine. It seems to have been a dog alright, or the 1.3 mk2 engine, up there purely for that carburettor..

the G60 is an add on!

 

kr and abf are savage imo. isn't 1.8t fairly highly regarded as one of the all time greats by any manufacturer. also absolutely adore the gtd engine and the standard 1.6td in a mk2 ain't too bad either. also had a 1.9tdi (only 90break) and quite liked it.

as for worst. wouldn't know. never owned any bad ones tbh.

 

My favorites would have to be the VR6 and R32, pure sound my bro has two vr6's.....
The 130/150bhp PD diesels for the power, not to mention the 1.8T
but really my 1.4 mk3 for starting every time, never let me down once since iv owned her!

Havent had any experience with bad engines (yet) but my dads B3 passat 1.6TD, a rocket until
the headgasket went...) The mkiv 1.4 ball of shit.... Have a mkiv gearknob in mine from a broken one ha,ha!!

Haven't driven that many vw engines to be honest, but from my experience the mk4 1.4 and sdi engines are shite. Especially the 1.4, which isnt even economical! I also found that it drove like a diesel without the torque... which is shit.

 

mk2 golf's and jetta's 1.6 petrol with them c??ts of carb's pierburg 2e2

I'm not just saying it 'cause I have one, but that 2.0 8v isn't a bad engine, with many with over 200k (especially in the UK & US)
I agree that they are not "GTI" material, especially in the Mk4!

Best - W8, R32, 2.8 V6, VR6, the PD engines, new TSIs & TFSIs

Worst - Mk4 1.6 & 1.4

2.8V6 24v (so by default the 2.8 12v and the 3.2 V6 and all the other variations of it.)
2.0 TFSI
1.8T
1.9 non pd 90bhp (my mate has a 90bhp with nearly 300k on it,ive never seen a car to suffer such abuse,yet it still runs like clockwork,also one of the most economical cars ive ever seen)

worst would be
1.4 16v

people knock the SDI engine but it does exactly what it says on the tin really.i would also rate the 130pd very highly.

 

VR6

 

1st> 1.8 8v, they go on and on for ever and take dogs abuse.
2nd> 16vg60, they get to 60mph very quick,look like an engine should, and sound like nothing else on earth(especially when the charger explodes

worst 1.4 16V cause it left me stranded and well out of pocket once

1.8 8v, having driven a few i know its not overly quick and quite dated in terms of tuning but you can rev the shite out of it, and it just wants more.

Few engines were built to be driven that hard, i doubt a 1.8t would take anywhere near that amount if abuse and still run nicely.

For me has to be the 8valve engine, what a piece of engineering and then strap a G60 onto it genus !!
I think the SDI is a great engine to be honest, sure it has feck all power but jesus my one hasn't givin me a days trouble in the 4 years that i have it and its still goin like the clappers.
The pd's great engine for power and torque, i would say most reliable diesel engine to modify, correct me if im wrong ??
