get yourself a transporter, from being around the van centre there the van that gives the least trouble.
transit is a fast moving tractor, and surprisingly expensive to repair if stuff goes. clutch's are crazy money on them and dont last.

if you need something bigger than a transporter the crafter is some van to.

We have and have had a range of different vans and the transit is not too bad but when they go wrong they are costly and not the easiest to work on. Sprinter are huge money when they go wrong. Iveco is hugely reliable and really able for weight but door handles and window winders are flimsy but they keep going and going. With a transit you will need replace injector pump at some stage and most likely convert to single mass. Really depends on what you want the van for and how you rate comfort against reliability i suppose. Cheers

Dont buy a Transit, We rent vans, We have a Newish transit and 2 Nearly new Sprinters, Mercs are miles ahead!

You can't compare a transit to a sprinter; there's nearly €10k in the difference.

If you're not doing big miles this is what you want

I bought a Renault Master new in 2004 , sold it last year with 130k on it.
All it got was a steering rack [started leaking] and 2 window regulators
It carried 7 men [crew cabbed by KVC] for all that time and got serious abuse , it was hassle free John
Just serviced it and put diesel in it really

I'm looking at the new Master 2.3 MWB for January delivery , only as the other one was so reliable

Compared to my 3 previous T5's , they were shite regarding reliability

Have looked at Transits too , the Ford dealer never called me back so that's out of the question!

How many drivers did it have in that time Ray? There are some ferocious bills have been produced by renault garages for gearbox and clutch work on those master vans.

My 08 transit has 130k kms on it. Apart from a new back axle (under warranty) it's been bang on. 115 T280 for reference.

I hired a 08 master to go to england for my windows, I reckoned it was a fair van, good power, not bad on juce but when I got back into my T5 it really was like night and day, I'm very fond of my t5, never gives an ounce of bother, gets driven hard enough but minded, 120k miles on her now and just going for a full service but have to say like any van you can just be lucky or unlucky!
knowing John and the work he has in mind I'd spend 2.5 or 3k on a tidy mwb sprinter or lt, very handy while building your house too, easily sold on after house is done! transits are softer now than the older ones and rusting very badly too, one mate of mine has a highroof 03 which if parked on unlevel ground the doors wont shut because of all the crossmembers being rotten!! I know of a few friends with them, all costing a fortune to DOE this year and making fuck all if they were to sell up! my t5 has done 3 DOE's with only needing 2 anti roll bar droplinks this year;) just my biased opinion

@Shane, 3 drivers. Our one thankfully never gave box or clutch trouble
@Cliff. That's a very valid point when you say that you can get a good one or a bad one in any van
You cant compare a T5 to a Master tho, different class of a van as the master is a 3.5T
You know your buddy that has my old T5, what did he replace on it?
I know it was costing him a small fortune

Another van to consider is an LT35, reliable enough old girls they are
Dave is very happy with his

That 01 Transit 190 long cube in the picture would be virtually indestructable. We had 100l's and they go forever. Suffered a bit from rust but a savage van for an oldie

ive sent a good few of them older transit to the scrappers over very bad rust issues.
the newer transit on from them ,98 on,are starting to rot like feck to,rear shackles going through the rear floor, door steps, sills, crossmembers, wishbone bushings, ball joints, front disks, front bearings, gearboxes, flywheels, timing chains, starters, rearlight clusters, spring bushings, broken springs...same on the rear wheel drive to with the drive shaft carrier bearings shitting themselves also..shall i go on??

the masters all have the common problems, mainly ball joints that have to be nearly done on a yearly basis,an gearboxes and wheel beraings, rear brakes, disk and drum brakes give alot of trouble...but as the lads said, most vans give a fair amount of trouble, but it all depends on how theyre looked after i supose.
ive seen some right gems to
